McCain Claims South Carolina
‘Charleston, S.C. — Arizona Sen. John McCain won the fiercely fought South Carolina Republican primary today, a sweet victory in the state that ended his previous presidential hopes.
‘Earlier, Mitt Romney captured the Nevada caucus in a race that the leading candidates had avoided.
‘The day’s outcome gave McCain a significant boost because it was his second primary victory and was a sharp loss for the runner-up, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who had hoped to run strongly in the Southern state. Huckabee, a Baptist minister, counted on the evangelical vote, which he won, but the final number fell short.
‘With about 90% of precincts reporting, McCain led Huckabee 33% to 30%.
