If You Pass Through The Border, The Contents Of Your Laptop Belong To The Government

Some American travelers find that something strange happens when they return from overseas trips: U.S. customs at the border insist on rummaging through the files on their laptops, perhaps downloading copies of everything on the hard drives to keep permanently. The customs officers may share the information found on said hard drives with whomever they wish. They can do this without warrants, probable cause, etc., because searching the content of laptops and cell phones is viewed as a routine check along the lines of searching a person’s baggage.
