Who Would Hunter S. Thompson Vote For?
RJB: Since I have been (re)reading the classic Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail ‘72 this campaign year — to make sense of things — this question has been on my mind. I have seen a recent good (great?) documentary from Alex Gibney titled Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson in which you can get a sense of this guy’s politics. The filmmaker Gibney offers this:
… I think he would say that we’re seeing the triumph of fear and loathing over that other part of the American character, this sense of idealism. Bush represented to him that aspect of the United States that goes back to its inception. At the same time, he was a big Bobby Kennedy fan and big McGovern fan. I think he’d be an Obama guy now. He would say, “Here’s somebody who understands the need for a prime actor in the theater of American politics.”
If I could speak for everyone, I would like HST to speak for himself … damn, man … we will all see the bats soon enough.
