NASA Hopes to Find Moon Water … By Crashing Into the Moon!

Posted by moezilla on August 25, 2009

NASA’s new LCross mission will test whether there’s water on the moon with a dramatic crash by the rocket’s upper stage to blast 200 tons of moon rock up 10 kilometers from a dark crater! (Where it can be measured by the rest of the space craft’s instruments…)

Even the moon’s hydrogen and oxygen deposits could be converted into air, water, and fuel — and NASA predicts “a number of different ways that we’ll be able to create water from whatever form of lunar hydrogen we find” on the moon. (Recent missions have already confirmed the presence of oxygen in moon rocks, while the sun delivers a constant stream of hydrogen…)

Carrying water to the moon costs $100,000 a kilogram, so these experiments could be the crucial step to getting more people on the moon….

Obama Breaks Vacation to Nominate Bernanke for Second Term at Fed

Posted by ralph on August 25, 2009

“As an expert in the causes of the Great Depression, I’m sure Ben never imagined he would be part of a team working to prevent another one,” the U.S. president said.

Andrew Clark and Larry Elliott, The Guardian:

President Barack Obama today nominated the chairman of the Federal Reserve, Ben Bernanke, to serve a second four-year term, delivering a vote of confidence that the US central bank chief is the right man to steer the world’s largest economy out of the deepest recession since the 1930s.

In a pre-emptive move to end speculation on the financial markets about the Fed’s leadership, Obama interrupted his summer holiday at the seaside resort of Martha’s Vineyard to announce that he wanted Bernanke to continue when his term officially ends in February.

The decision is subject to ratification by Congress, where some Republicans have criticised Bernanke’s willingness to intervene in the free market.

Standing alongside Bernanke, the president praised…

Federal Reserve Loses Suit Demanding Transparency

Posted by Dumbsaint on August 25, 2009

NEW YORK (Reuters) — A federal judge on Monday ruled against an effort by the U.S. Federal Reserve to block disclosure of companies that participated in and securities covered by a series of emergency funding programs as the global credit crisis began to intensify.

In a 47-page opinion, Chief District Judge Loretta Preska of the federal court in Manhattan said the central bank failed to show that disclosure would cause borrowers in the Federal Reserve System to suffer “imminent competitive harm,” by stigmatizing them for using Fed lending programs.

The Pirate Bay Taken Offline By Swedish Authorities

Posted by DCMIKEISDEAD on August 25, 2009

Following the earlier court defeat for Fredrik, Gottfrid and Peter and the pending civil action taken by several Hollywood studios, the Swedish authorities have now ordered The Pirate Bay to be disconnected from the Internet. The site’s bandwidth suppliers have been threatened with a large fine. The site is completely offline.

Today, Stockholm’s district court took action to completely remove The Pirate Bay from the Internet.

The court ordered the site’s major bandwidth supplier, Black Internet, to disconnect TPB from the Internet or face penalties of 500,000 kroner ($70,600). The ISP complied, saying that it had no choice but to uphold the law.

The censorship of The Pirate Bay will continue pending the outcome of a civil action taken by several entertainment companies including Disney, Universal, Warner, Columbia, Sony, NBC and Paramount.

Rick Falkvinge, leader of The Pirate Party said: “This is absolutely ridiculous. The Court seems to consider themselves above the Constitution,” while…

The Boy Who Heard Too Much

Posted by ralph on August 24, 2009

He was a 14-year-old blind kid, angry and alone. Then he discovered that he possessed a strange and fearsome superpower — one that put him in the cross hairs of the FBI.

DAVID KUSHNER, Rolling Stone: It began, as it always did, with a phone call to 911. “Now listen here,” the caller demanded, his voice frantic. “I’ve got two people here held hostage, all right? Now, you know what happens to people that are held hostage? It’s not like on the movies or nothing, you understand that?”

“OK,” the 911 operator said.

“One of them here’s name is Danielle, and her father,” the caller continued. “And the reason why I’m doing this is because her father raped my sister.”

The caller, who identified himself as John Defanno, said that he had the 18-year-old Danielle and her dad tied up in their home in Security, a suburb of Colorado Springs. He’d beaten the father…

CIA Report Reveals That Interrogators Threatened to Kill 9/11 Terrorist’s Children

Posted by ralph on August 24, 2009

AP (WASHINGTON) — The Obama administration is assigning a veteran prosecutor to begin a criminal probe of CIA questioning of terror suspects during the Bush administration, and a new detainee interrogation unit is being created to be supervised by the White House, officials said Monday.

Federal prosecutor John Durham will be appointed by Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate alleged CIA abuses, said a Justice Department official, speaking only on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the matter.

Word of that decision came within minutes of the release of a newly declassified CIA document describing how interrogators threatened to kill the children of one Sept. 11 suspect and may have threatened to sexually assault the mother of another detainee.

The administration also announced Monday that all U.S. interrogators will follow the rules for detainees laid out by the Army Field Manual. That decision aims to end years of…
