United States Wants To Create 30,000-Pound Bomb
Australian news reports that the Pentagon is working on a 30,000-pound bomb called the Massive Ordnance Penetrator, or MOP. MOP is ten times more powerful than its predecessor and is designed to destroy deeply buried bunkers beyond the reach of existing bombs.
The weapon is still being tested. However, the United States hopes to have bomber planes equipped with it active by July of next year. Such plans are dependent on Congress’s shifting enough funds into the program.
What’s the point? “”It’s very possible that the Pentagon wants to send a signal to various countries, particularly Iran and North Korea, that the United States is developing a viable military option against their nuclear programs,” says Kenneth Katzman, an expert on Iran at the Congressional Research Service.
