Obama and the Swastika

If there was any doubt that the bloom is off the rose for U.S. President Barack Obama, this picture from a Massachussetts golf course confirms that the honeymoon is over:

As reported by News 7 Boston, however, the idiots who did this managed to carve the swastika the wrong way round if they intended it to be a reference to Hitler’s Nazi symbol!

LAKEVILLE, Mass — Police along with the Secret Service are investigating after a local country club discovered a symbol that represents eastern religious beliefs carved into the green.

Lakeville Country Club workers discovered the vandalism early Monday morning.

Police believe the vandals meant to carve a swastika next to President Barack Obama’s name on the 18th hole; however, the symbol was backwards and means hope and peace in some Eastern countries.

    This is especially interesting to me today.

    I took Grandma to the Antiques Roadshow today and she had an old crockery salt container that was decorated all over with what appeared to be swastikas.

    It was interesting because we learned that the Nazis were not the first to use the swastika symbol as it has been used for thousands of years by many different peoples. In fact, the shape of the Nazis’ swastika is different. Theirs is on an angle, not straight on like the one on the field.

    According to Barbara G. Walker in The Woman’s Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets, the swastika appears on Palaeolithic mammoth ivory carvings from the Ukraine that date back to 10,000BC. It was also used on coins in India, Persia, Asia and Greece.

    In India, the symbol had different meanings depending on whether it was clockwise or counter clockwise (the swastika’s “direction” depends on which way its points are facing). The counter clockwise swastika is associated with the goddess Kali and the clockwise with Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles.

    Sooooo…these vandals have inadvertently paid homage to Obama with their counterclockwise swastika vis a vis the goddess Kali whose name means “black”, but has by folk etymology come to mean “force of time (kala)”. Despite her negative connotations, Kali is today considered the goddess of time and change.
