I'm not a cosmologist or astro-anything scientist for that matter but the potential for a large solar flare to disrupt the earth’s atmosphere is a very real thing. In our lives we've seen radio / TV reception outages, Cell phone reception problems etc from solar flare activity. These incidents were obviously not on the scale to cause a catastrophic event but show how susceptible we are. Solar flares happen cyclically. They are normal and immensely powerful.
