Cattle Mutilations Baffle Colorado Ranchers

Posted by Raymond on December 22, 2009

From the LA Times:

Reporting from Denver – Manuel A. Sanchez has ruled out every logical explanation for the fate that has befallen the calves on his ranch in southern Colorado.

Over the past month, he’s found four calves dead in a way that he cannot reconcile with anything in his 50 years of raising cattle: eyes and ears missing, tongues and genitals excised in what appeared to be a series of fine cuts.

Mountain lions, bears or coyotes would leave messier marks, he said. And Sanchez found no tire tracks or footprints that would suggest a human invader — nor even bloodstains he’d expect to find around the carcasses if someone had butchered them.

“There’s nothing to go by,” said Sanchez, who estimated his financial loss at $10,000. “I can’t figure it out.”

Costilla County Sheriff’s Sgt. James Chavez agreed: “There’s nothing to follow up on.”

Besides Sanchez’s calves in San Luis, several cases have been reported near Trinidad.

It’s not the first time.

    Chupacabra? That far north?

Oh no! I can't readily explain this! Let's blame it on mythology and impossible space beings!

colorado….hmmmm home of focus on the family and now bizarre animal mutilations…..coincidence? I think not.

Not that I think it IS aliens, but what exactly makes it impossible just because you think so? Well if you know for a fact it's impossible please enlighten the rest of us so we might forever know that no aliens could possibly have any insanely advanced and/or crazed reasons for mutilating cattle. Leave the closed mindedness to the fundamentalists.

For someone taking such a snide tone and throwing around accusations of closed-mindedness, you certainly don't seem to be keeping yours open.

Here is why aliens (as popular media conceive of them) are impossible:
    * Have you ever studied any astronomy? If so, you would know that even getting to the Oort Cloud (the outward boundary of just our solar system) would take us 10,000 years with our current technology. Getting anywhere habitable would take us well into the tens of millions of years. (And bear in mind that Earth has only been putting out radio waves for 150 years, about the only way they would know at a distance we were worth visiting.) Even assuming the physical impossibility of light speed travel, our nearest galactic neighbor is four light years away. Note I do not say “nearest habitable neighbor”. We are surrounded by lethal planets as far as we can see.
    * Aliens as media conceives of them are bilaterally symmetrical with two eyes, one nose, one mouth, a pair of thumbs, a neck, and walk upright. You know, like us. Because, even though the Cambrian Explosion alone threw out a truly insane number of body types, intelligent beings from the cosmos would look no different than hydrocephalics with anorexia? Especially telling is that studies have showed that the Greys look suspiciously like how babies see adults for the first few months of life. Given that the most intelligent non-primate on Earth are cetaceans, who still resemble us far too much despite being vastly different, do you truly believe creatures that evolved on another planet under its unique conditions would come out like us? (This is not to say there isn't alien life. Logically, according to the Drake equation, there is intelligent life somewhere out there. It just isn't visiting us.)

I hope that opened your mind somewhat. Now, please show me why it might be aliens.

This was my immediate first thought, as well.

  • Word Eater

    I agree.

They aren't aliens, they are time travelers from our own distant future.

  • Synapse

All you gave are reasons the popular media would be wrong (of course they're wrong, they've never met aliens either).

Yes, space is extremely large and no technology we know of could transverse it effectively, not even light speed. That's irrelevant if they're advanced beyond what we would possibly know and have ways around it. Their specific form would also be irrelevant to their purposes.

Hence, again not that I believe this, but aliens are a POSSIBILITY because if aliens did exist and developed technology well beyond what we can imagine, not only could they come here and do whatever they want without our knowledge, but their purposes and methods wouldn't make sense either.

  • Word Eater

The ways of unicorns are beyond our understanding, too.

I'm not sure Synapse even took into consideration that leprechauns are known to have a fetish for cow eyes.

  • GoodDoktorBad

Those cattle will soon be in your Wendy's burger. All the good parts were left behind. Yummy!
