Texas Rewrites The Nation’s Textbooks

Posted by JacobSloan on January 13, 2010

Washington Monthly reveals how a small group of ultraconservative Texas residents has managed to rewrite the public school textbooks used across the entire nation:

“Evolution is hooey…the way I evaluate history textbooks is first I see how they cover Christianity and Israel. Then I see how they treat Ronald Reagan.”

Views like these are relatively common in East Texas. But McLeroy is no ordinary citizen…[he] sits on the Texas State Board of Education, [and leads] an activist bloc that holds enormous sway over the body’s decisions.

As the state goes through the once-in-a-decade process of rewriting the standards for its textbooks, the faction is using its clout to infuse them with ultraconservative ideals. They aim to rehabilitate Joseph McCarthy, bring global-warming denial into science class, and downplay the contributions of the civil rights movement.

Can we just let Texas secede already?

  • Georgia Christian

Way to go TEXAS! I'll be the first to move to Texas if they secede! It's about time we took back our Christian Nation.

  • Truth Seeker

This nation is farther from christian than the fools who call themselves “christian” who are more like HYPO-christians who do what the bible says…as long as you are being watched by others. The #1 problem with this or any other government is the fact that religion is the main factor behind the most important decisions made. It is beyond idiocy to make even the smallest decion based on fairy-tales about people and events that never existed with no evidence of being in any way factual. Whatever happened to seperation of church and state?

yet another sad reason why our public education system is in the toilet.

Good ol Texas Fascism. I love it. And I love America. Love it or leave it, commies! Remember, good white americans, if it werent for Texas, our wonderful white christian nation would be overrun by satanic leprotic al-qaeda mexicans . Never forget who stood between our great country and the Sandinista hordes when they tried to invade us, Reagan and Texas!

  • Broken_Finger

Nope. It's ours now. No backsies. We'll still let you practice your religion, you just have to promise to keep it to yourself. Deal?

  • James T.

Makes me want to help Mexico take Texas back from these fucking protestant fascist scumbags.

Those extremist fundamentalist Christians are the most dangerous people on Earth. They are an unconcious force contolled by Billionaires , doing whatthey are told and not asking any questiosn about anything

According to this textbook they just put out, the separation of church and state is a liberal lie popular among Satan worshipers and feminists. If we can just change the past, we can own the future.

Seriously, though, articles like this make me grateful for books like Lies My Teacher Told Me. No joke, this bloc created textbooks that maintained that the freed slaves were given control over much of the South, but the poor Negroes just weren't smart enough for that so the brave white man had to step in and help them out. I am not sure that there still aren't textbooks in classrooms stating this racist lie about Reconstruction.

Yeah, it was never theirs to begin with. Do we have to bust out the list of quotes from the Founding Fathers, Trolling Georgia Christian?

McLeroy also plans to hand out a free gun to each child as he or she is given the new text book.

All the other 49 states should tell the school book publishers unequivocally, “If your book is edited by anyone from Texas – especially a low-grade moron like this doughy McLeroy douche – then we ALL won't buy your books.”

Why the hell are we letting Texas – literally the stupidest state in the nation, decide “how our children is learnin'” for all the rest of us?

Texas comes in dead last (50th) in percentage of their population over 25 who have a high school diploma, and it also has the highest rate of teen pregnancy in the nation, so that “abstinence” crap they advocated for at the expense of public health isn't exactly working out either. But hey, they do rank 3rd in the number of officials convicted of corruption!

The last smart Texans were Molly Ivins and Ann Richards. And the Dixie Chicks. The rest of them are all hat, no cattle. Or maybe Texan women simply have more brains than the men. Who knows…. It's not like outthinking McLooney would be that hard, though.

I think Americans must accept that their “nation” is a deeply backward one and becoming more so. You have entered your final period of decline from which no escape is possible. The windfall white settlers extracted from having a fresh continent to rape from scratch has long ago been expended. The coming era of scarcity will rip the mask of civility from your hate filled faces and you will finally lay aside all pretence of honour, mutual respect and love for one another.
How ironic is it not that anti-evolution Christians will be amoung the main instigators in this new round of “survival of the fittest”?

The only good thing I can take away from this is that most of these people are old, and will be dead soon. Not soon enough for me.

next stop, the dark ages….didn't we go through this already? what is next burning witches? someone wake me up when they outlaw religion or at least require anyone religious to take psychiatric testing. or the very least not allow people in the position of power if they believe in talking snakes or any other insane fantasies..

A well stated intelligent comment on a state that is not. I believe Mcleroy is the English translation of Hitler.

It would be humorous if it were't true.

The USA is NO more a christian nation than we are a “white” nation simply because about 74% of the people are Caucasian. By calling this a christian nation you are marginalizing & demeaning people of color, non-christians & atheists. Your logic & actions are critically flawed & self centered beyond belief. Please keep your egocentric thinking inside your private homes and churches, NOT our government.
