Liberalism, Atheism, Male Sexual Exclusivity Linked to IQ

Posted by Raymond on February 26, 2010

From CNN:

Political, religious and sexual behaviors may be reflections of intelligence, a new study finds.Evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa at the the London School of Economics and Political Science correlated data on these behaviors with IQ from a large national U.S. sample and found that, on average, people who identified as liberal and atheist had higher IQs. This applied also to sexual exclusivity in men, but not in women. The findings will be published in the March 2010 issue of Social Psychology Quarterly.

The IQ differences, while statistically significant, are not stunning — on the order of 6 to 11 points — and the data should not be used to stereotype or make assumptions about people, experts say. But they show how certain patterns of identifying with particular ideologies develop, and how some people’s behaviors come to be.

The reasoning is that sexual exclusivity in men, liberalism and atheism all go against what would be expected given humans’ evolutionary past. In other words, none of these traits would have benefited our early human ancestors, but higher intelligence may be associated with them.

“The adoption of some evolutionarily novel ideas makes some sense in terms of moving the species forward,” said George Washington University leadership professor James Bailey, who was not involved in the study. “It also makes perfect sense that more intelligent people — people with, sort of, more intellectual firepower — are likely to be the ones to do that.”

good eGo ogle search results my friend! be careful of “statistics” or quantitative analysis explaining away qualitative organic means into looking at a whole.

I'm a liberal atheist that doesn't sleep around. Cool.

ok this story is B.S. which is to be expected from CNN.

while i am monogamous, i am by no means a liberal, (by the generally accepted meaning of the word), nor am i an atheist.

i also took an I.Q.test last year. (a real one, not the 20 minute internet B.S.) i scored rather high.

the running theme from the MSM is congratulating liberals for voting democrat. buffering the liberal ego, letting them know how smart they are for doing so.

also when you factor in the fact that universities school young adults in liberal thought, (not actual critical thinking.), it's not surprising that “liberals” think of themselves as so much smarter than the average bear.

Whether the study is valid or not, your point about your own IQ and beliefs is irrelevant. You are one data point. The study speaks in terms of averages. A correlation between average higher IQs and particular beliefs/lifestyle choices does not translate to “all atheists have higher IQs than all religious people,” for example.

Your insecurity in your own intellegence is yet another sign of weakness, conservative one.

#1 i am not insecure about my intelligence. you don't know me and can't make such assumptions. it shows you're judgmental.

#2 i am by no means conservative. where you got this idea from is beyond me.

#3 again you don't know a thing about me, so you do not know the strength of my character.

leave the personal attacks for another site.

it's ok for the article to make a generalization, but not me?

what about the rest of my comment?
    the MSM?
the university indoctrinating young adults into a specific mindset?

ummm… this is because atheist liberal white guys that won't admit to cheating on their wives are the ones who come up with the status quo that keeps track of who's IQ is highest..

The article is simply giving the results of a scientific study, and what may be the reasons behind it. Is it not ok for them to do this?

  • Belcat

The problem here is, despite the intelligence, you don't understand the difference between probability and fact. There's a greater chance of those three together, yes, but there's still a lot of people having only two or one of those things mentioned.
There is definitely some insecurity coming from your post. Liberals might not always encourage critical thinking, but feel free to go to Fox News and see how they think. It's definitely anything but critical thinking, it's more like disbelieve anything that doesn't fit your agenda.

  • Polymorpheous

Umm… as I said before, I’m not a conservative. Fox news is for shit. I won’t waste my time on that garbage.

Also, the article is making a generalization about liberals. In turn insinuating a generalization about conservatives. I’m just pointing out how absurd this is.

As for my insecurity… because I’m not a liberal you are to believe this? (Civil Libertarian actually) If you can’t see liberals congratulating themselves for their perceived intellect than I have to ask: Silly man, who’s agenda are you tied to?
