Kevin Costner Has a Machine that Turns Oil Into Water (Video)

WaterworldIs BP listening? Reports WGNO ABC26 News:

Kevin Costner is in town hoping star power and his oil spill clean-up machine will help in the gulf.

It promises to help clean up the oil spill. And it’s got some big backing. “Years before I got involved oil spills would come and, I would wonder why we couldn’t clean this up,” says Actor Kevin Costner. He’s invested in a company that invented a processing machine that turns oil into water. “It’s robust. Works at the speed that someone talked about, 200,000 gallons a minute. But it takes 99% of the oil.”

Using a small prototype of the machine, Costner demonstrated how it works for a group of stressed parish officials today. “We’ll take this any day over the black oil that’s covering south Plaquemines right now,” says Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser.

The larger centrifuge model can collect up to 3,000 gallons of oil a day and right now, 31 are available. The response: There are no better options. “I think it’s a no-brainer to try it,” says Jefferson Parish Councilman John Young. Nungesser says, “I think we need to put it to work.” And St. Bernard Parish President Craig Taffaro says, “Let’s get this out there. See what it can do.”

Cool idea but I doubt they will use it. On Olberman they discussed how BP board members are also board members on the company that makes the chemical dispersant they are using to “clean up” the oil.

Even though other chemicals have been shown to be safer, cheaper, and less damaging to the environment they would rather keep the money in the loop. There is no way they would buy or invest in a machine that puts their friends out of work.

I think they better use whatever they can get their damned hands on. If it works, frickin' use it.

The spill is also drifting towards the Florida Keys and the absolutely irreplaceable reefs in that region. If those are damaged, it will have effects on the entire ocean. Moreover, these oils and the chemical dispersants that BP is throwing about willy-nilly, are creating oxygen-free dead zones where EVERYTHING dies. The pictures Rachel Maddow had on last night looked like “the Angel poured forth his bowl and the seas died” bad.

Moreover, we need to think about this beyond the current crisis (something we're really bad at doing, but we MUST do). I saw a graphic the other day showing all the rigs currently operating in the Gulf. There are a whopping 3,701 of them. If even 1% of them have the same safety issue as this one, the potential disaster is unimaginably bad.

Time to engage the precautionary principle.

Also, we might want to do something like appoint people who aren't industry shills to regulate the industry. The guy in charge of regulating this safety stuff just resigned. He was appointed by “the Cheney” less to regulate than to look the other way.

I say if you were appointed by the last Administration, it's time for you to be on the unemployment lines with the rest of America. Especially since you helped put us here.

People have designed systems to clean up these messes, it's just that the oil companies have refused all investment. For example, there is this that was proposed a couple decades ago: http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/energy/....

Also, the machine doesn't work exactly like this seems to suggest. It separates oil and water. It's a time proven use of centrifuges. Oil spits out of one port of the machine, water out of the other. Oil is not by any means turned into water.

I think the idea of using the Centriuges will work I'am operator and mechanic so if you need help doing this job e-mail me and me and my crew could help you out I been working on and with centrifuges for 18 years.
