The informative Phil Plait writing his Bad Astronomy blog is saying it’s some kind of man-made space rocket.

Maybe so, but time-traveling aliens sounds so much fun to me:

    I live in the area where this phenomonen was sighted. Many people saw it, all descibing it in the same manner.
    We have since been informed that it was 'just a rocket' and have all gone back to watching re-runs of three and a half men

    Excuse me? None of the aliens I've time traveled with have used spiral-shaped portholes. They use luminescent moongates, or sometimes police call boxes, but never a glowing spiral in the sky. Get your facts straight.
