Federal Judge Declares U.S. Military’s Ban on Gays As Unconstitutional
The AP via Google News reports:
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — A federal judge in Southern California on Thursday declared the U.S. military’s ban on openly gay service members unconstitutional.
U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips granted a request for an injunction halting the government’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy for gays in the military. Phillips said the policy doesn’t help military readiness and instead has a “direct and deleterious effect” on the armed services.
The lawsuit was the biggest legal test of the law in recent years and came amid promises by President Barack Obama that he will work to repeal the policy. Government lawyers argued Phillips lacked the authority to issue a nationwide injunction and the issue should be decided by Congress.
The injunction was sought by the Log Cabin Republicans, a 19,000-member group that includes current and former military members. Government lawyers argued that Phillips lacked the authority to issue a nationwide injunction and Congress should…
Malaysia Opens “Baby Hatch” For Abandoned Babies
Malaysia’s answer to the high number of unmarried mothers and abandoned babies is an anonymous drop off service. Via BBC:
The cries of an abandoned baby boy echo in the nursery at Orphancare, a Malaysian charity that helps orphans find adoptive parents.
He is the only child here and does not have a name. But in many ways he is seen as one of the lucky ones.
He was left in a baby “hatch” – the first in the country – designed to allow mothers to leave their babies anonymously.
The charity hopes it will rescue more unwanted newborns, as the authorities seek to stem the rising number of abandoned babies.
Close to 500 babies have been found abandoned since 2005. Some were left in Muslim prayer halls, on doorsteps and even in rubbish bins. Many are found dead.
It is thought these children are mainly abandoned by single mothers. Having a child out of wedlock…
U.S. Soldiers In Afghanistan “Killed Civilians For Sport And Collected Their Fingers As Trophies”
Wow, it doesn’t get much more grotesque than this. One of the most disturbing aspects is soldiers’ covering up the psychopathic behavior of their comrades. The Guardian reports on allegations against a dozen U.S. soldiers:
Twelve American soldiers face charges over a secret “kill team” that allegedly blew up and shot Afghan civilians at random and collected their fingers as trophies.
Five of the soldiers are charged with murdering three Afghan men who were allegedly killed for sport in separate attacks this year. Seven others are accused of covering up the killings and assaulting a recruit who exposed the murders when he reported other abuses, including members of the unit smoking hashish stolen from civilians.
Investigators said Gibbs, 25, hatched a plan with another soldier, Jeremy Morlock, 22, and other members of the unit to form a “kill team”. While on patrol over the following months they allegedly killed at least three Afghan civilians.…
Americans’ Credit-Card Debt Surpassed By Student-Loan Debt
In August, an unheralded milestone was passed: Americans now owe more on student loans than their credit cards. Credit-card debt has actually gone down a bit over the last two years, due to increased frugality and companies cutting off lines of credit. College-loan debt, on the other hand, keeps rising and rising…towards a trillion dollars, the Wall Street Journal reports:
Americans owe some $826.5 billion in revolving credit, according to June 2010 figures from the Federal Reserve. (Most of revolving credit is credit-card debt.) Student loans outstanding today total some $829.785 billion.
“The growth in education debt outstanding is like cooking a lobster,” Mr. Kantrowitz says. “The increase in total student debt occurs slowly but steadily, so by the time you notice that the water is boiling, you’re already cooked.”
Student Loan Justice, a Washington State-based student loan advocacy group issued a statement on the student-loan eclipse, estimating that media coverage of credit cards…
Florida Pastor Cancels Koran Burning (Video)
I wonder what Obama said to him…
However, it ain’t over yet because everyone’s favorite idiot church, Westboro Baptist Church, says they’ll do the burning instead. Has everyone gone mad?!?
Nashville Man Sues Whole Foods Over Exploding Tea
Tea seems like an unlikely thing to explode, never mind exploding twice. A man in Nashville is suing Whole Foods Market over tendon damage in his hand after a bottle of Tazo tea exploded, breaking the glass. The Nashville City Paper reports:
If a Nashville man’s lawsuit holds up in court, the verb “to Tazo” just might enter common parlance, as in “Don’t Tazo me, bro!”
Bernie Bublick claims a bottle of Tazo Giant Peach Tea blew up at his home on April 5, sending shards of glass into his right hand and damaging a tendon. He says he has gone through two surgeries on the hand to repair the damage.
Bublick’s legal complaint, filed yesterday in Davidson County Circuit Court and available at this link, asserts that the Whole Foods Market in Green Hills was negligent in selling him the bottle and that Starbucks, maker of Tazo, was negligent in manufacturing it.
The lawsuit…
Vitamin B Supplement Can Revolutionize Treatment Of Brain Disease
Photo: Ragesoss (CC)
Vitamin B tablets could slow and even halt the devastating march of Alzheimer’s Disease in the elderly, according to a breakthrough British study reported in the Telegraph:
The research showed that large doses of the supplement could halve the rate of brain shrinkage – a physical symptom associated memory loss and dementia in the elderly.
The effects were so dramatic that the scientists behind the work believe it could revolutionise the treatment of the disease.
Brain shrinkage or atrophy is a natural part of ageing but it is known to be accelerated in people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) – a kind of memory loss and forgetfulness – and Alzheimer’s. Scientists at the University of Oxford conducted a trial on 168 people and found that taking high doses of three vitamin B supplements every day reduced brain shrinkage associated with dementia by up to 53 per cent.
They said the results were…
UN Sets Global Agenda
Details of a high level United Nations strategy meeting have been leaked to Fox News, with the inevitable subsequent fear-mongering regarding a conspiracy to create a one world government:
After a year of humiliating setbacks, United Nations Secretary General Ban ki-Moon and about 60 of his top lieutenants — the top brass of the entire U.N. system — spent their Labor Day weekend at a remote Austrian Alpine retreat, discussing ways to put their sprawling organization in charge of the world’s agenda.
Details concerning the two-day, closed-door sessions in the comfortable village of Alpbach were closely guarded. Nonetheless, position papers for the meeting obtained by Fox News indicate that the topics included:
- how to restore “climate change” as a top global priority after the fiasco of last year’s Copenhagen summit;
- how to continue to try to make global redistribution of wealth the real basis of that climate agenda, and widen the discussion further to…
During War There Are No Civilians
Rachel Corrie in front of Israeli bulldozers
Was every human being on the face of the Earth just drafted?
According to Al Jazeera there’s been an unseemly instance of honesty:
“During war there are no civilians,” that’s what “Yossi,” an Israeli military (IDF) training unit leader simply stated during a round of questioning on day two of the Rachel Corrie trials, held in Haifa’s District Court earlier this week. “When you write a [protocol] manual, that manual is for war,” he added.
For the human rights activists and friends and family of Rachel Corrie sitting in the courtroom, this open admission of an Israeli policy of indiscrimination towards civilians — Palestinian or foreign — created an audible gasp.
Yet, put into context, this policy comes as no surprise. The Israeli military’s track record of insouciance towards the killings of Palestinians, from the 1948 massacre of Deir Yassin in Jerusalem to the 2008-2009 attacks on Gaza that…
How To Improve Your Study Habits
Turns out everything we thought we knew about studying is wrong … the New York Times reports on cognitive science research that reveals how to improve study habits, whether you’re in grade school or a post-graduate:
…In recent years, cognitive scientists have shown that a few simple techniques can reliably improve what matters most: how much a student learns from studying.
The findings can help anyone, from a fourth grader doing long division to a retiree taking on a new language. But they directly contradict much of the common wisdom about good study habits, and they have not caught on.
For instance, instead of sticking to one study location, simply alternating the room where a person studies improves retention. So does studying distinct but related skills or concepts in one sitting, rather than focusing intensely on a single thing.
“We have known these principles for some time, and it’s intriguing that schools don’t pick them…
Watch Arthur C. Clarke Predict Our World Today In 1964
Here’s science fiction giant Arthur C. Clarke from a BBC Horizon episode from 1964. He’s on the money with current aspects of our modern life, in talking about technology that enables telecommuting and mobile phones, but a bit too far out in other areas. (I’ll leave that for your comments.) Enjoy!

Suicides In Japan Cost Economy $32bn
I would think the number one problem is that Japan has the highest suicide rate in the world, not the fact that it’s hurting the economy. BBC reports:
The government in Japan says suicides and depression cost its economy almost 2.7tn yen ($32bn; £21bn) last year.
The figures refer to lost incomes and the cost of treatment. It is the first time Japan has released such figures.
Japan has one of the world’s highest suicide rates, with more than 32,000 people killing themselves last year. PM Naoto Kan sees it as proof of an economic and emotional downturn.
The government is setting up a task force to try to reduce the rate.
From Friday, it will run a video clip of a footballer from the J-league on its website, urging people to be more aware of the problem.

Police Raid The Headquarters Of PRQ, Webhost Of Pirate Bay And Wikileaks
Police in several European countries are coordinating a fight against a certain “radical conception of freedom,” embodied by Wikileaks and Pirate Bay. Rogue euronerds beware, French paper-of-record Le Monde writes:
The Swedish police raided the premises of the host PRQ in Solna, Sweden. This “host activist” advocates a radical conception of freedom of expression, including the servers hosting the download site The Pirate Bay or sites advocating pedophilia. It is also the host of Wikileaks, the site specializes in the publication of confidential documents made public this summer tens of thousands of reports of U.S. forces in Afghanistan.
According to preliminary information from Swedish media, the search was linked to a download illegal files, as part of an investigation by Belgian police launched two years ago.
Other raids have taken place in other Swedish cities and in other countries including the Netherlands and Hungary. No arrest has been performed in PEQ, contrary to a…
Even Your Pants Are Lying To You?
I don’t believe Disinformation’s first book, the Russ Kick anthology You Are Being Lied To, (now updated as You Are STILL Being Lied To), covered fashion, but this story made me think of it. Wow, as Americans, it seems that we don’t want to accept even the truth about ourselves right beneath our noses. Abram Sauer writes on Esquire:
I’ve never been slim — I played offensive line in high school — but I’m no cow either. (I’m happily a “Russell Crowe” body type.) So I immediately went across the street, bought a tailor’s measuring tape, and trudged from shop to shop, trying on various brands’ casual dress pants. It took just two hours to tear my self-esteem to smithereens and raise some serious questions about what I later learned is called “vanity sizing.”
Your pants have been deceiving you for years. And the lies are compounding:

Charles Manson: Global Warming Prophet
Paul Joseph Watson says that eco-nut James Jay Lee, along with many prominent environmentalists and academics, share their eugenicist belief system with the man who many consider to be evil incarnate, at Prison Planet:
Charles Manson, the man who masterminded the brutal murders of nine people in the summer of 1969 in an effort to spark a race war in America, has adopted a new cause from his prison cell in California – he is a prophet for the global warming movement – sharing common ground with top academics, environmentalists and even the White House science czar in calling for large numbers of human beings to be exterminated in the name of saving the Earth.
A study of Manson’s belief system is an alarming exercise in understanding the roots of the modern day eugenicist movement, which is propagated via the notion that overpopulation is killing the planet and causing global warming.
Two Asteroids Perilously Close To Earth
NASA/JPL plot of asteroids' paths
These ones probably won’t hit, but they show that so-called Near Earth Objects could collide with our planet at any time with precious little warning. From ABC News:
Today is not a good day for the anxious among us. Two small asteroids — two in twelve hours — are passing the earth, both coming within the moon’s orbit, one of them whipping by about 49,000 miles away.
In a spirit of calm, we ought to point out that NASA says close calls like these happen, on average, almost daily. The difference is that usually we never know. These two objects were both spotted Sunday by the Catalina Sky Survey at the University of Arizona.
The specifics:
–Asteroid 2010 RX30 is estimated to be 32 to 65 feet in size (10-20 meters) and passed within 154,000 miles of Earth at 5:51 a.m. EDT this morning. (The moon, by comparison, is 2,200…
