A Lesson In Social Media Ignorance: Earthquake In Japan 2011

Posted by BananaFamine on March 14, 2011

WTF People?

A friend recently shared a link to an image featuring a collection of facebook statuses regarding the recent events in Japan. All of which are blatantly ignorant and insensitive, to such a degree that it most likely will qualify as black humor for some. I am not sure the history of the image, however I’d assume they were gathered using something like YourOpenBook.org (A search on the site reveals many similar postings).

    Hey…not everyone can lead a porpoise-driven life.

yea well yall dont remember that we payed them back for pearl harbor already! …besids pearl harbor was a misunderstanding ! people need to stop bringing up old shit.! i mean cmon almost 70 years and yall still have a grudge? pretty damn childish dont ya think? leave them poor japs alone! …the good thing is is we are helping them rebuild … god bless america! and god bless japan!!!!!

  • JAG

Those Americans talking about Pearl Harbor probably were not taught in school that the U.S. then dropped TWO atomic bombs on innocent Japanese civilians–the Japanese only attacked military personnel. You have to be fair.

    right on!!!!

It seems a good number of them arent kids; however a lot of them were probably kids when their mommies and daddies were giving them the same propaganda that they were raised on

    AMEN BROTHER!!!!!!

How does what these people say affect anything? It doesn’t. Who cares. Free speech. Reporting on it is probably the worst thing to do if you really think it matters, because now not only do their friends see the statements, but countless others that were never meant to read it will see it, so the statements are now spreading. Good going. Not that it really matters.

  • Richard Curtis

you are 100% right ! malkere…couldnt have said it better!

  • Andrew

I guess now the question is if you deliberately lied about this being a hoax or if you read it was a hoax elsewhere. Either you were the one trying to prey upon gullibility, or your disbelief is more gullible than the belief of those you look down upon.

It needs a post about someone fapping to the carnage to really get to black humor.

  • Anonymous

It is much funnier if you imagine they think the Japanese are responsible for the movie.

  • Josh Evolved

Yeah because America is such a great country, so easily these people forget of how we treated the Africans in the early years, how we abused unknown numbers of Chinese immigrants during railroad expansion, or the genocide of the Native Americans. Or what about the CIA lies that fueled Vietnam, or the Japanese “internment” camps post Pearl Harbor. Or what about the active poisoning of American citizens during the prohibition era, or what about Jim Crow laws, or what about anti-abortion laws, or what about the barbaric act of the death penalty.

Yeah, America is so fucking awesome. As an American at least I know how fucked up my country is, and at least I know our sordid past. These buffoons only know the gleaming lies and half-truths they’ve been taught.

    Fucking ass-hats.

How about we stop the cycle of ignorant bullshit and we just say “What a tragedy!” instead?

Nagasaki/Hiroshima were an over-zealous retribution for Pearl Harbor. That should be the end of it.

My grandmother lives in Honolulu and was a pre-adolescent girl when Pearl Harbor was attacked. SHE doesn’t have a grudge against the Japanese. Get over it, America!

yeah, probably Grand Theft Auto, right?

So if a major disaster happens like this in Germany are we going to be like, “Remember the Jews? Pay back!”?

    Hi Vox,

I see you’re still upset about that reply I left you some time ago, as you’re basically splooging all over Disinfo to prove me wrong.

…And wrong I am. Initially, I had checked 3 or 4 of profiles and nothing came up. Congrats on those of you who took the time to look up a few more and prove me wrong.

Especially you Voxmagi, a man among men.Not all of us can make it through life mistake free as we weren’t blessed to be constituted from Adonis DNA and tiger’s blood, yadda yadda yadda….

This would be a great way to identify people who we should transport to the moon so that Earth can be a place solely for evolved human beings.

I’m pretty sure we already got payback by winning the war. It was a war, after all. Pearl Harbor was a military target.

As to the one guy who said, “wonder how much money we will send to them,” the Japanese killed over half a BILLION Chinese. There were almost no reparations and the two countries hate each other. China is still sending aid.

  • Malkere

it’s not the only cause certainly, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, works for a lot of people, but it doesn’t work for a lot of people also. I think it’s more the parents fault than anything, but letting your kids play GTA at the age of 6 is really not the best choice for some kids… not all kids, but some need better.

  • Anonymous

Just wait till the next quake on the New Madrid fault line, fuckers. Google that location!

I’m willing to help Japan. Just need a mode of travel to get there. Fuck my remedial, dull existence. I want to aid the victims.

  • Pgmalone

How can anyone say that japan is now suffering from this as punishmnet fpr Pearl harbour, remenber Hroshima and Nagasaki and the American A Bomb let alone the destruction of Tokyo and Osaka and a host of other cities with conventional bombs. Mai Lay in Vietnam, the Iraq war based on a lie.

Japan after the war promoted Peace, in the peace park in Nagasaki and did a lot in peace for its people.

  • David

The International Surfing Body has confirmed this years pro comp winner was a tired looking Japanese guy on a wardrobe … too soon?

  • Godozo

Heck, they would have probably thought that Commodore Perry was the guy in the destroyer that made Tojo sign the surrender documents.

  • Godozo

So the earthquake and tsunami were karma for Pearl Harbor? Cool…

    Means the clock is ticking…

Three years, seven months and twenty-eight days, and we should start getting our Karmic payback for Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I should be able to move out by then…

Thank you. Malkere’s ignorance is just as strong and I’m sick of his (and others’) simplistic analysis. He obviously has his own issues.

  • http://twitter.com/skylcort Tony G.

All this Wrath of God bs is just more of that Andrea Yates syndrome creeping in because many nutty Christers haven’t met their psychological shadow, you know, that part of the conscience and subconscious that is *irrational* because they don’t seem to realize they’re even capable of that.

  • http://twitter.com/AnitaCigarette Anita Cigarette.

I think they are trying to fit in & be cool. I noticed most of these heinous remarks are being made by stupid teenagers, whom probably aren’t paying enough attention in class to know wtf Pearl Harbor was about in the first place!!

  • http://twitter.com/AnitaCigarette Anita Cigarette.

    Said perfectly. xo

While I agree that it comes down to an individual basis, the distractions and temptations Malkere brings up are a contributing factor to what keeps people of certain upbringings from succeeding. Its good that you and others have enough self-control to become socially aware, however I know too many people who have been lobotomized via America’s hedonistic, for-profit culture.

  • ooookkkaayy

how can you be pro abortion and anti death penalty at the same time? you can kill babies but not murderers?

  • LAUGHINGBARRY

FLAME WARNING: for you wuss Westerners Don’t cry

Funny how people are so feminine in America, bunch of sissy’s. People in other country’s laugh at us because of it well actually all westerners. If it hurts you to see people be human don’t pay attention. How hard is that? Don’t cry and ponder over how people see Americans… Its not American its human. Americans think they are the center of the world and being Americans means you are more then human. GET OVER IT

P.S This was a message for many people on this forum

  • rumaging_pinz

You’re kidding, right? Nobody’s “pro-abortion”. It’s called pro-choice, which isn’t the support of killing babies.

We need to forgive and move on. The people of Japan have suffered one of the greatest catastrophes in recent history (and the reactor situation still has to play out). We in this country are extremely fortunate to have not experienced (9-11 not withstanding) the kind of massive destruction visited on Japan many, many times. The people of Japan are to be commended for their behavior in this latest tragedy. They are in my thoughts.

  • XKommunik4tor21

Actually, not every “American” burst into tears over Japan’s sudden catastrophe. A lot of “Americans” (as you put it) just think that it sucks. I personally don’t believe that the United States should interfere with the business of the rest of the world unless the rest of the world decides to interfere with our business. When Hurricane Katrina happened, our government denied $854 million dollars from foreign nations offering help. (Thank former President George “Dubya” Bush for that one…idiots..) Anyhow, with that point being made, most European/Asian think that the United States is made up of fat, stupid, greedy people which is unfortunate because those of us with an actual opinion that doesn’t correlate with the rest of the country doesn’t get heard unless it furthers some political agenda. We know we aren’t more than human. We are over ourselves. Our government is not. Anyone else that wants to think that we sit and worry about what the rest of the world thinks of us, you’re completely insane. Our government watches for opportunities to make capital and the people keep an eye on our family and homes; we could honestly care less about the rest of the world because the rest of the world isn’t us and we have our own things to take care of. I see no reason to give any sympathy or condolences to Japan. Their government took precautions for this exact situation, if their reactors meltdown/explode and radiation is released into the atmosphere, that’s when I’ll be worried because that could cause problems for everyone worldwide. Not just the United States of America… Dildo Douchebaggins, stop trying to make it sound like every American bursts into tears whenever we hear about a tragedy on televised media. Trust me, if you were here, you’d see how many of those same Americans really don’t care at all.

  • Zel

Are you fucking kidding me? These ignorant statements come from people who probably weren’t even alive during WWII or witnessed Pearl Harbor. And, btw people, do some research because our government knew about Pearl Harbor and “allowed” it to happen for entrance into a war we secretly supported by funding Nazi Germany and big banks. And, Nagasaki/Hiroshima anyone? Justify that.
But, despite all that, these comments show the human morale now: APATHY. You are giving the human race as bad name. Go back on faceboook and disappear.

  • ahumanbeing

I don’t think you can blame video games that are violent or violent movies or books. I grew up watching violent movies and playing tekken, etc…and I turned out to be a compassionate human being. The culture around us helps to depict who we become but it does not MAKE us who we are. These teenagers and people that are posting about WWII pay back are just ignorant. If there is one thing I have learned is that you can not let the past explain the future, but you can use the past to reflect upon and grow. Repeating past mistakes doesn’t help anything.

Clearly there was one person on facebook who wrote it as their status and someone found it funny, and re-posted it…then the next, and so on and so forth. The insensitivity is astounding to me, but I think going for the usual and customary blame of video game violence is absurd.

The social network has overtaken the world to be honest, and every person, young, old, smart, stupid is on there…there are going to be ignorant people on facebook just like there are ignorant people in the world, they just now have a single location to post their absurdities. shame on them, sincerely, as this was a natural disaster not one country attacking another. As human beings we should feel compassion for the HUMAN BEINGS that lost their homes, families and some their lives.

    “Imagine there’s no countries
    It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion too
    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace”

2 clarify i meant they care in a vain way not that we are sensitive.

  • Lgolos

Pearl Harbor was ‘retribution’ for economic warfare and having war games off the coast of japan

  • Anonymous

The Japanese only attacked military personnel? I guess you believe their line that the Rape of Nanjing never happened amirite?

  • Anonymous

The TRUTH of the matter is that the Japanese ARE much more well behaved in this event than those in Katrina.
