Unprecedented Solar Eruption

Posted by majestic on June 8, 2011

According to C. Alex Young, a solar astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, yesterday’s massive Coronal Mass Ejection on the Sun is “nothing we really have to worry about.” Try telling that to Lawrence E. Joseph, who in the disinformation documentary 2012: Science or Superstition, claims that there is a correlation between heightened solar storms and alarming meteorological and atmospheric changes on Earth.

Hmmm. Whatever the case it’s awe inspiring (see Young’s video below). He says that “the sun produced a quite spectacular prominence eruption that had a solar flare and high-energy particles associated with it, but I’ve just never seen material released like this before. It looks like somebody just kicked a giant clod of dirt into the air and then it fell back down.”

It’s facinating that people classify something so chaotic and destructive as an object of beauty. Try that to a charging lion in the wild. I say this because I feel like we should be embracing both chaos and order just as this guy is. As an astronomer, he has learned to classify, detail the event and see it in different POVs and also admires the sheer power. If it is possible in someone else it is possible in you.

Seriously, I’m already on the site, leave me alone to surf articles in peace without shoving things in my face.

I have a sinking feeling that this is a preview of things to come. I fear that come 2012 we’ll get hit by one 10x this size and it’ll take down our power grid for months if not years.

Given the distances involved, I It’s think it’s amazing that it only takes several seconds for the material to fall back to the surface.

If you had listened to the video, he explicitly says it took 3 hours for the whole thing to happen. That’s still blazing speeds from what we’re used to but probably not so fast for outer space activity.

  • RONIN

Yeah, apparently I was too busy saying “holy shit, this fucking awesome” to listen to what he was saying. Thanks for pointing that out.

Look at the third flare, it looks like a face – open mouth, nostrils, shading where eyes would be, the shape of a head! No hokey theories, just happens to look like a face.

this is nothing and happens all the time.  spaceweather.com and n3kl.org

the sun is waking up in this new solar cycle we are entering.. no big deal, but the auroras we get as a result of a CME directly hitting our magnetosphere are simply astonishing.  you know geomagnetic storms cause birds to migrate the wrong direction?  yeah, apparently fucks with their pineal gland which is responsible in them for instinctively knowing which direction to fly.. kinda makes you wonder if our pineal gland may be responsible in us for similar instincts.. like a “direction in life”
