Who would have thought – popping an E could cure cancer! From BBC News:

Modified ecstasy could one day have a role to play in fighting some blood cancers, according to scientists.

Ecstasy is known to kill some cancer cells, but scientists have increased its effectiveness 100-fold, they said in Investigational New Drugs journal.

Their early study showed all leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma cells could be killed in a test tube, but any treatment would be a decade away.

A charity said the findings were a “significant step forward”.

In 2006, a research team at the University of Birmingham showed that ecstasy and anti-depressants such as Prozac had the potential to stop cancers growing.

The problem was that it needed doses so high they would have been fatal if given to people.

The researchers, in collaboration with the University of Western Australia, have chemically re-engineered ecstasy by taking some atoms away and putting new ones in their place.

One variant increased cancer-fighting effectiveness 100-fold. It means that if 100g of un-modified ecstasy was needed to get the desired effect, only 1g of the modified ecstasy would be needed to have the same effect…

    Don’t get  too excited – there are many other studies where substances kill cancer cells in vitro, but they almost always fail to produce the same effect in vivo. MDMA is awesome though, so I’d like to believe that this will pan out.

    I find it pretty sad that the BBC can’t even refer to it by the actual compound name. One can only assume they are talking about MDMA but not even once is it referred to as that. The problem with Ecstasy tablets is you have no clue what it could be cut with or if it contains any MDMA at all, it might just be meth or heroin. Pure(er) forms of MDMA come in the form of a white powder, referred to as Molly. Until society understands the differences there will always be a negative connotation with the term “Ecstasy”.

    yes ecstasy pills are “designer” drugs. More of a compact cocktail of drugs then just MDMA.

    Our wonderful government has known for decades that their are many compounds in the plant world (entheogen’s) ,cacti, mushrooms, cannabis and others that extremely beneficial to mankind, BUT would rather spread DIS-INFORMATION.
    The great USA knows it cannot patent something that grows anywhere, and could put a big dent on the pharmaceutical industry, the textile industry, yet create jobs for millions! 
    Its real sad that the government is bed with insurance companies that drug test employess (the new reefer madness) and in bed with the lobbyist that work for the Pharmaceuticals industry, the timber industry, the pulp paper industry, oil…etc. All just to make the few at the top BIG money. WHEN are the people of this country going to have enough of it????????

    I will point out that Glaxo has been one of the major forces to push for research into the potential of MDMA, as well as other phenethylamines and tryptamines (including the active components in peyote and mushrooms, Mescaline and Psilocybin, respectively), for treatment of mental disorders, is a primary producer of THC pills for glaucoma and cancer patients, and many other similar initiatives.  You cannot lump all of the manufacturers into the same category… Glaxo and Bayer have nowhere near the same track record, for example.

    They probably just used pure MDMA and called it modified ecstasy (it wont kill you now because it doesnt have the meth and heroin in it)

    I’m in law enforcement and the failed war on drugs is little more than a multi-billion dollar self-perpetuating system of revolving door injustice. The reason Prohibition failed is more Americans enjoyed the sinful spirit than those who attempted to demonize it. There are just as many marijuana users in America but it is so anti-socially stigmatized that no one can organize the necessary resiatance.  Now with this break-through the DEA and other Federal law enforcement agencies will flood the net and media with disinformation about how deadly all drugs and because they placed them on “Schedule 1″ they know better.

    Why do you think there is so much federal and legal interference with the legalization effort folks? Of course! If marijuana became legal that would mean billions of dollars would dry up overnight. It would not matter if Autism, Cancer, AIDS, male impotence, OK I digress, were able to be eradicated there would still be unrelenting resistance because in the eyes of Federal Law Enforcement and the prision system it is their bread and butter! Now if suddenly every angry wife and woman in the world became as horny as a teenage boy at 75 years old, you can bet Congress and the DEA would legalize that shit overnight!
