Woman Arrested For Closing Her Bank Account

Wonkette has a disturbing account of the NYPD’s alleged arrest of Citibank customers for attempting to close their bank accounts. A snippet:

“I heard that a few dozen people had decided to head over to the local Citibank branch to talk about their student debt and close their accounts. I thought one of my friends might be among them so I walked the few blocks to the bank.

As I arrived I saw Citi Bank security guards locking the doors to the bank. Contrary to the City Bank PR statement, the cops were not yet on the scene when Citi Bank officials chose to lock the doors to the branch–effectively kidnapping those inside.”

    Technically they arrested her and the others for “trespassing”. But then again the bank could be cited for the misuse of 911. You’re only supposed to call for an emergency, which this was clearly not.
    Either way it’s a horrible PR move and will hopefully inspire others to move their money from these big banks to local credit unions.

    Duh, I don’t get it, why did this happen? What are the details of exactly why they got arrested. What did they supposedly do that was disorderly? What order did they dis-order? 

    This story smells funny but I can’t make out the odor…wait, is that ass?

    There’s gotta be more to it though.  I’d like to see video of everything they did while inside before I form an opinion.

    i read the article that was linked above but it doesn’t offer much of an explanation of what set this off… she says when she arrived the security guards were already closing the door.. so she wasn’t there when the whole thing started..   I would be very interested to know why the security guards felt they had to lock the doors

    Is there more information? I hope that everyone who posts people getting arrested will have the whole story. If supporters of this movement don’t have all the facts it will only cripple the credit of what everyone is working for and give more power to the machine. Journalism must have all the facts.

    this is crap.  they didn’t get arrested for closing there accounts, they got arrested for protesting in a bank lobby.  this site is a mockery of modern journalism.

    How did they figure that the people were there to close accounts?  I didn’t get any reasons at all from the video as to why everyone was there.

    You cannot go into a private business and start disrupting it, especially a friggin bank, and expect not to get asked to leave. Once you refuse to leave, you are trespassing on private property and the cops will usually be. Anyone who owns a business would do the same thing. This is pure propaganda. If they wanted to have a demonstration about how they were irresponsible with student loans and its someone else’s fault, they would’ve been within their rights to do so on the sidewalk outside. As far as closing accounts, many have closed accounts with BoA in the last week with the sole consequence of having a branch manager kiss their butt, trying to keep them as a customer. Please get a brain, folks.

    If they (the bank security guards) attempted to physically remove the “protesters” they would be leaving themselves open to lawsuits. Since the “protesters” can’t sue the police for removing them, the bank had them do it instead.
