the group dynamics of mass hysteria and rumor panics
by Alex Burns (alex@disinfo.com) - January 21, 2002
From the Parental Music Resource Center debacle over 1980s heavy metal music to recent moves to ban the Harry Potter books and film, popular culture has generated mass/group hysteria and the dynamics of rumor panics.

By viewing the sequences from the following films and documentaries (available on video and DVD), you will begin to discern how mass/group hysteria and rumor panics are generated. And if you are vigilant, you may be able to prevent them.

Selected clips to illustrate Mass Hysteria and Group Dynamics:

· The crowd riot scenes from Metropolis (1926).

· Selected NSDAP rally clips from Triumph of the Will (1935).

· The hysterical depiction of marijuana from Reefer Madness (1936).

· Historical footage of The Rape of Nanking (1937).
