rabelais: primus interview
by Alex Burns (alex@disinfo.com) - January 09, 2002
Primus
The Palace (Melbourne), 5 May 1994

The PA was playing a recent William S. Burroughs album, fighting for space with Winger and Twisted Sister videos. The acrid smell of spilt beer and a haze of cigarette smoke hid a venue that was crowded to near full capacity.

After a set from supporting band Seaweed Gorillas, the curtains parted, and fans yelled the traditional greeting "You Suck!" at the top of their lungs. Bassist Les Claypool grinned from ear to ear and Primus slammed into an eighty-minute set of dazzling musical virtuosity, humour, and originality.

An early surprise in the set was a cover of Ministry's classic "Thieves" which got the crowd fired up. The band played most of the material from the recent album Pork Soda, turning "Nature Boy" into a sing-along duet with frontline stage divers and moshers. "Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers" segued effortlessly into "Bob" with a quick drum solo from Tim 'Herb' Alexander. Claypool showed his unorthodox bass techniques on "My Name Is Mud", "Harold of the Rocks", and a blistering version of "Mr. Krinkle." Guitarist Larry 'Ler' LaLonde somehow created submarine sounds for Sailing The Seas of Cheese (1991), and the band jammed onstage with extended versions of "Pork Soda" and "Tommy The Cat". A notable highlight was a grinding version of "Fish On" from Sailing The Seas of Cheese, topped by Claypool's unique nasal sounding vocal lines.

"Just pretend for a minute that you're in a stadium and Ler is actually Sting!" Claypool joked during the first of two encores as the crowd sang the chorus to "Here Come The Bastards." While songs like "The Air Is Getting Slippery" were missing, Primus flawlessly played other material such as "Jerry Was A Race-car Driver" which was missing from the 1994 Big Day Out set-lists.

"Some fuckin' drug addict has cut my cocaine with sandy flush," Burroughs moaned in his Dr. Benway incarnation. But who needs cocaine when you have a substance as pleasantly addictive as Pork Soda?
