Going AWOL from Military Encroachment
"Chew on that a minute. Sounds harmless enough at first, but remember this is Boeing - the same company that justifies its billions in tax breaks and corporate pork by emphasizing the company's contributions to civilian life. Never mind that Boeing has a disgraceful track record of violating governmental contracts, and that in spite of accepting "job creation" subsidies, it has slashed 100,000 employees in the last ten years. Never mind that even though the company is propped up with taxpayer dollars, its profits remain private and nothing stops it from moving production - and jobs - to places like military factories in Xian, China. Doesn't matter: Boeing is still the leading recipient of US Export-Import Bank corporate welfare, and a symbol of American pride."
The Powell Doctrine: Baghdad/Jenin/My Lai
"Moral of the story? Truth is often the first casualty of war. Before we hang our hopes on heroes or unquestioningly believe what we hear from even the most reliable sources, we need to dig deeper to find the real story. Second, while the US was appropriate to be outraged at the targeting of its civilians in the September 11 attacks, we should extend that outrage to scenarios in which our government targets, or is complicit in targeting, civilians elsewhere."
Internet Underground: The John Perry Barlow Interview
"The ultimate authority is one's own conscience. And one's conscience is formed in part by the society he lives in and his willingness to be in that society and participate in its culture. And I think if you take a look at the history of authority, you'll find that the authority we've [America] been using the past 300 or 400 years is an anomaly in the history of humanity. Now, I will admit that the rule of law had some virtues; I'm not convinced that it's impossible for those virtues to be manifest by other means. I'm skeptical about anarchy. I believe you have to have some kind of hybrid of the old system and the one that's developing to maintain order. But, by the same token, I'm not for fixing anything until it's demonstrably broken. Much of what's going on, regarding trying to establish authority on the Internet, is going on purportedly to solve problems that I don't see any evidence of."
Why Pat Buchanan Doesn't Want Me to Have Children
"What won't Buchanan say or do to sell more books? It is clear that he is using this ever-sensitive moment in American history, when distrust of immigrants and xenophobia are at its highest in the post-September 11 era, to sell a record number of his books."
