Stop the FTAA
A great place to start, with FTAA information, resources for activists, news, and links to like-minded groups in your area.
FTAA Official Web Site
The official FTAA Web site. Note the use of rhetorical devices like "integration", "barrier elimination", and "transparent negotiations". Uhhh, so you consider secret meetings and a mystery document to be "transparent"? Glad to see such wizards of the English language are running the entire fricken' globe!
The FTAA at Global Exchange
Some great resources, including the Top Ten Reasons to Oppose the FTAA, Frequently Asked Questions about the FTAA, How the FTAA Will Affect You, and much more.
OQP 2001
"In response to the coming Summit of the Americas, a coalition, made up of groups and individuals in the Quebec City region, formed in December 1999: Operation Quebec Printemps 2001. We are part of a wider movement organizing against blind economic globalization that benefits the elite few."
Internal Documents from FTAA Meetings
Some documents leaked from the TNC’s secret meetings. Find out what this agreement has in store for you and the rest of the world.
FTAA Audio Files
RealAudio and MP3 file from teach-ins about the FTAA.
IndyMedia at Quebec
The Quebec-based Independent Media Center. Loads of articles and updates to keep you up to speed on the FTAA protests.
Unveiling NAFTA for the Americas
This document is a good introduction to the FTAA, and answers questions like: "What is the FTAA?", "Who is involved in FTAA negotiations?" and "What will the FTAA's practical effects be?"
Free Speech TV
An independent media source with RealPlayer documentaries. One of the best sites on the Internet.
The Free Trade Area of The Americas: Information Clearinghouse
An anti-FTAA site with information about the various actions that will take place during the SOA.
Protest.net
Site that notifies you months in advance of protests taking place around the world. A good one to bookmark.
CorpWatch
Independent media against global corporate takeover. Awesome site. Hopefully this is an augur of things to come in the future of alternative media.
The Institute of Policy Studies
One of the few progressive think-tanks, I personally believe this type of research center is the future of government (please don't blast me in the forums for that one, it's a personal opinion). Projects include research on how to implement logical drug policy reforms, how to bring Augusto Pinochet to justice, and other forward thinking initiatives.
A20
A good place to visit if you plan to get involved in the FTAA protests. Includes a protest calendar, a field guide, and a signup to join a network of protest groups from around the world.
FTAA Introductory Kit
A long piece that looks at how the FTAA will affect the environment, human and labor rights, and so on. Great, great stuff. Also available in Adobe Acrobat PDF format, so you can download, print, and distribute to all your friends.
Understanding the FTAA: A Guide for Activists
An in-depth analysis of the possible provisions of the FTAA from the Action for Community and Ecology in the Regions of Central America.
Second People's Summit of the Americas
"The Hemispheric Social Alliance (HSA) is a network of organizations and social movements from North, Central and South America that meet to develop strategies, exchange information and plan joint actions in order to promote alternatives to the current development model, based on hemispheric integration and embodied in the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA)."
NAFTA Claims
The FTAA will expand the investor-to-state regime that overrides social policies dealing with public health, the environment, etc. Corporations, under Chapter 11 of NAFTA, can sue foreign governments if their laws interfere with profit-making. This site goes a little more in depth into the cases and claims that are being decided by secret tribunals every day. Rampant greed, secret courts, laws that apply to the poor, but can be overridden if you've got the money . . . sounds like we've got a totalitarian empire operating right under our noses doesn't it?
Public Citizen: Global Trade Watch
Trade Watch is a group that promotes corporate accountability. The FTAA page includes a letter sent to the Chairman of the TNC demanding that the negotiated text be released to the public. Also, you can view a field guide to Quebec, in addition to other great features.
FTAA Archive @ ZNet
An excellent archive of anti-FTAA material. Includes articles from Walden Bello and Naomi Klein, as well as an FTAA factsheet.
Rights Action
A grassroots organization touring the U.S. and Mexico to teach about the FTAA and its possible adverse effects in the Third World.
Focus on the Global South
The FTAA is admitting no input from NGO's, which means the interests of the "little people" will not be addressed. "Focus" is fighting to insure that the voices of the poor and oppressed are heard, concentrating on the Asia Pacific.
Third World Network
An international, non-profit network of researchers who look at the devastating effects that so-called "free trade" has caused in the Third World, with sections analyzing biodiversity and environmental destruction, human rights, and the WTO's unforgiving policies.
The International Forum on Globalization
Formed after the passage of NAFTA, the IFG is a group of researchers, educators, and activists devoted to enlightening the world to the devastating effects of globalization. "The International Forum on Globalization advocates equitable, democratic, and ecologically sustainable economics. It is formed in response to the present worldwide drive toward a globalized economic system dominated by supranational corporate trade and banking institutions that are not accountable to democratic processes or national governments. These current trends toward globalization are neither historically inevitable nor desirable."
Campaign for Labor Rights
The FTAA will discourage attempts by labor unions to fight against poor labor standards, low wages, and lack of benefits. "When union members in Latin America, Asia, and in the U.S. are abducted, jailed or assassinated, when strikers are attacked, organizers threatened or unions repressed, the LDN responds rapidly and effectively in the name of concerned, dedicated U.S. labor activists: people like you."
Student Alliance to Reform Corporations
A coalition of activists fighting for corporate accountability. "Corporate influence within our government, our media, and our universities has shifted power away from the people. The relentless pursuit of profit without conscience or regard to consequences has inflicted countless wounds on our people and our environment. We must take action. The era in which corporate interests take precedence over justice will end."
50 Years
"50 Years Is Enough: U.S. Network for Global Economic Justice is a coalition of 205 grassroots, faith-based, policy, women's, social- and economic-justice, youth, solidarity, labor, and development organizations dedicated to the profound transformation of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF)."
United for a Fair Economy
United for a Fair Economy was founded as a "movement support" organization to provide media capacity, face-to-face economic literacy education, and training resources to organizations and individuals who work to address the widening income and asset gap in our country.
Fair Trade Federation
Some people confuse the "free trade" with "fair trade". Free trade is about abolishing barriers that get in the way of corporations establishing industries, that's it. Fair trade groups, like the FTF, are helping to establish a global economy based on sustainability, development, and maintaining cultural identity.
As You Sow Foundation
An organization fighting for corporate accountability. In the near future we need to establish global guidelines by which transnational corporations must abide by, it's that simple.
Researching Corporations
An awesome service provided by CorpWatch that links you to various resources and research companies that can hook you up with everything you want to know about your favorite (or most despised) corporation.
Act Up
A coalition of activists out to reform policies contributing to the global AIDS crisis, a crisis that the FTAA will only intensify.
Trade and Investment: Publications: The Free Trade Area of the Americas
Maude Barlow is one of the leading anti-globalist writers. I strongly recommend reading this article, which analyzes, in detail, the impact the FTAA will have on the Western Hemisphere. The first half looks at each section of the FTAA, while the second half is devoted to what the agreement will mean for Canadians.
The Free Trade Area of the Americas: Hemispheric Forest Threat
An article that looks at how the FTAA will lead to massive logging and environmental destruction in the Western Hemisphere. The FTAA will not only advance the elimination of tariffs, but also NTB's, which basically means anything that gets in the way of making profit.
WTO Action: Stop the Summit of the Americas
"In the spirit of Seattle, and the anti-IMF/WB demonstrations in Washington on A16/17, we've started to organize to make sure the Summit is effectively short-circuited. We want to go beyond symbolic protest or reformism to making sure the Summit of the Americas is shut down."
FTAA: Myth vs. Reality
Some more accurate "rewordings" of the rhetoric used by pro-globalization supporters of the FTAA.
Alternatives for the Americas
An important document that offers a progressive, more rational alternative to the FTAA.
FTAA Teach-In
"On April 20th of 2001, the "teach-in" of the II People's Summit will highlight civil society's capacity for resistance and for developing alternatives, and will reinforce our conviction that "another America is possible". The "teach-in's" festive environment will bring together discussions, personal testimonies and reports from North and South, colourful visual and musical clips, amazing animation and 15 musical performances to boot!!"
Ya Basta!
A New York based, anti-globalist collective. Ya Basta! calls for a mass crossing to take place on the US-Canadian border at Cornwall, NY, by all who aspire to be citizens of the world, indivisible by borders, nations and checkpoints, and consistent with globalization's "free borders" rhetoric."
NAFTA's Powerful Little Secret
Amazingly, a New York Times article (March 11, 2001), by Anthony DePalma, that doesn't look like it was written by a corporate sponsor. In fact, it's against free trade! Some good information here about NAFTA's adverse effects, although the writer goes off on a tangent in the second half. Still worth reading.
USA: The FTAA and AIDS Crisis in the Global South
A distressing article about how the FTAA, if implemented, will make AIDS treatment impossible in the third world, in other words extending the crisis in Africa to the Americas. Requires free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view.
Jubilee 2000: The Movement America Missed
This Alternet.org article (March 6, 2001), by Tamara Straus, examines the Jubilee 2000 debt relief movement, which was grossly unreported by the U.S. media. Thanks to the actions of a few NGOs from around the globe, not to mention the incredibly effective lobbying of U2 lead singer Bono, 22 third world nations were relieved of over $100 million in debt. This is a strong indicator of what community-based movements can accomplish.
FTAA Online Jeopardy!
Test your FTAA knowledge. No "virtual Alex Trabek", but entertaining nonetheless.
Seven Years Under NAFTA
A PDF document that analyzes the negative impact that NAFTA has wrought in the U.S. and Mexico. Includes helpful charts and graphs, this is another one that I'd recommend printing and donating to your loved ones. Requires free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view.
