genoa g8: tonight, this is not what democracy looks like
by Alex Burns (alex@disinfo.com) - July 22, 2001
For the life of the flesh is in the blood . . . or the life of every creature--its blood is its life.
~~ Leviticus 16:11, 14

Upon reflection, this makes a lot of sense. For not only is blood the river of life a human body, but also life of the societal body. Murder diminishes the life of any community, no matter the size. In the spilling of blood, especially that of a highly valued member of a community or group, the community symbolically sees its life blood spilled. The killing of a police officer is regarded as a greater crime in society than the killing of a drifter, not only because they are a more honored member of the community, but even more so because they are there to protect the life of a community. Martyrs represent the most committed members of a community, reflect the greatest values of altruism. Therefore, their death reaches deep into the spirit of a community, forcing it to reflect on its mores, deep-level values and moral underpinings . . . Thus, if the life is in the blood, then the spilling of blood, especially valued blood, becomes a galvanizing force for the very life of the community, family or individual connected to the one whose blood has flowed, is symbolically connected to that death or loss.
~~ Dr. Caleb Rosado, private e-mail to International Paleopsychology Project, 11 July 2001

I say to you againe, doe not call up Any that you cannot put downe; by which I meane, Any that can in turn call up somewhat against you, whereby your powerfullest Devices may not be of use. Ask of the Lesser, lest the Greater shall not wish to Answer, and shall commande more than you.
~~ H.P. Lovecraft, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, 1941

To honor our dead, not a minute of silence. A whole life of struggle.

This letter (July 23, 2001), by ZNet sysop Michael Albert, responds to the Genoa G8 violence: "This is not a pretty nor even a humane calculus, but it is the logic of dissent against monstrous violaters of human civility. We need to make known the state's violence against our dissent, of course. But we need to retain our priority focus on globalization and capitalism, and on the vastly more widespread and deeper violence of these ubiquitous systems. We have to achieve growing popular support, growing morement commitment and insight, and to simultaneously saddle the state's preferred repressive options."

Howard Bloom
Howard Bloom's scientific research explains the hidden connections between intergroup conflict, protest symbols and violence. "Why would a group that coheres at the site--or symbol--of blood outcompete groups that fail to jell when some of their members die a violent death caused by an enemy troop? Why do groups that seeing red, ball up like a fist and strike, survive? How do they pass on the emotional jolt that brings us together when we see crimson corpuscles pouring forth from a fallen comrade we only know through symbols-- songs and stories that conjure the image only in our imaginings?"
