information visualization tools
by Alex Burns (alex@disinfo.com) - August 21, 2001
The best tool for displaying and manipulating systems is the computer, which allows us to display a system and then observe it from any perspective. We can "navigate" the system, moving from one node to another, exploring the contents of each node and the essence of the links between nodes.
~~ John L. Petersen [1]

Hang your plumb bob on the moon so it points to Earth. Finding what makes living healthier for Homo sapiens and other living things is the job to be done. Align from that point over any piece of geography, culture, community, village, or organization.
~~ Don Edward Beck, Ph.D. and Chris Cowan [2]

The Internet changed our relationship with global media flows and Vectors. Just as we can upgrade our everyday perceptions and thinking, from embracing the agnostic visions of Robert Anton Wilson to avoiding the tribal excesses of Aryan Nation, the tools developed for Information Visualization (InfoViz) purposes can enable us to see patterns and trends in the onrush of fabrication and disinformation. It's time to migrate these tools from their civil planning and military applications to address new and urgent Problems of Existence. From the globally-aware activist to the New Media analyst, one future mind-machine interface is already beckoning for our fleeting attention . . .
