us terrorist attacks: global terrorism resources
by Alex Burns (alex@disinfo.com) - October 24, 2001
Terrorism's hermetic image in the public consciousness, after the 11 September 2001 attacks on America, has largely been shaped by their horrific impact, the news media's frames and filters, and the Bush Administration's retaliatory bombing of Afghanistan. These factors converge to simplify a complex geopolitical situation into "Infinite Justice": a watchword for the Manichean battle between virtue under siege and an evil Other. The War on Terrorism could easily reshape the balance of power in US domestic politics. Civil liberties and new technology have already been threatened by groups that have hidden their agenda under the guise of counterterrorism.

In the attack's aftermath, counterterrorism experts have become the source for analytical sound-bites. They represent a group of policy institutes, think-tanks, and journals that have been profiling known terrorist groups, tracking incidents, and creating vital signs indicators. While individual analysts and institutes have achieved media attention, most in-depth research on global terrorism has been obscured by the repeat of searing images and editorial deference to populist geopolitical models like Samuel P. Huntington's Clash of Civilizations and Thomas Friedman's Lexus and the Olive Tree. These models show snapshots of the global situation but not the full in-depth picture.

Global terrorism in the 21st century has evolved into a complex and ever-changing phenomenon. The line between internal insurgency, civil wars, and terrorism has become blurred. It is now waged over resources and symbols, and fought along cyberian and religiopolitical faultlines. Political discourses about terrorism now encompasses many subjects, such as counterterrorism, ethno-political and new resource wars, biological and chemical warfare, homeland defense, nonproliferation treaties, and weapons of mass destruction.

The growing list of resources here will hopefully enable you to cut through the media spectacle and the political doublespeak about the global War on Terrorism: to gain a more multidimensional view of terrorist campaigns, their beliefs and motivations, the possibilities of future attacks, and the action currently underway to prevent them.
