us terrorist attacks: profiling osama
by Alex Burns (alex@disinfo.com) - October 25, 2001
In Dominique LaPierre and Larry Collin's gripping novel The Fifth Horseman (1980), Muammar al Qadaffi and a group of terrorists hold the US and Israeli governments to ransom by hiding a nuclear bomb in New York City. The governments are powerless to disclose this situation to the American public as the terrorists have orders to immediately detonate the weapon if any revelations are made. In a crucial scene, perhaps reminiscent of the Cuban Missile Crisis, senior US government officials speak with Qadaffi by satellite uplink to hear his ransom demands involving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The US officials have a negotiation secret: newly developed Israeli equipment that can profile eye/voice patterns in real-time to determine if Qadaffi is lying or not. But unknown to the officials, Qadaffi had bribed the equipment's inventor for his own cache . . .

The psychological profiling of political dissidents and terrorists has come a long way since Walter Langer's wartime OSS study "A Psychological Profile of Hitler". Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, psychological profiling instruments and theories evolved to great complexity as research data was gathered and analyzed. When Jonathan Demme's film adaptation of Silence of the Lambs (1991) achieved both commercial and critical success, behavioral and criminal profilers like John Douglas and Robert K. Ressler became best-selling 'true crime' authors and media celebrities. APBNews and similar Web sites attempted to build an audience based on this micro-trend.

Like the impact of Jonathan Demme's film on American popular culture, the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks have created renewed interest in behavioral and criminal profiling. Central Intelligence Agency applications are on the rise (operatives use the Enneagram as a profiling tool). Their focus will be on the hunt for the elusive and mysterious Osama bin Laden. Maybe I'll post our in-depth psychological profile of bin Laden, just after I order this cute Devil Chicken mug . . .
