hazel henderson
by Alex Burns (alex@disinfo.com) - February 01, 2002
The whole of my life has been about getting further and further upstream, so that I'm ahead of the power curve, as it were. And the highest upstream that I can figure out how to get is in designing new cultural DNA and splicing it into cultural codes, as well as identifying malfunctioning "DNA strands," such as GNP, which generate pathological patterns in the body politic. This activity has the biggest multiplier in terms of shifting the system towards sustainability.
~~ Hazel Henderson, "Economics in the Solar Age" (1990).

Good Governance and Participatory Development
Hazel Henderson presented this paper for the United Nations International Conference on Governance for Sustainable Growth and Equity (July 28-30, 1997). Henderson gives an in-depth analysis of why, in the Digital Age, international markets must be more carefully regulated, taxation systems need urgent reform and why the UN should be funded. Other topics include "full cost" pricing, public-private-civic partnerships, and the battle over global standards. Highly recommended reading.

Perfecting Democracy's Tools
This is a chapter excerpt from Hazel Henderson's book Paradigms In Progress (Indianapolis: Knowledge Systems, 1991) that discusses cybernetic models of democracy, the role of diversity generators and unifying concerns in business and how to reform industry pricing. Captures the trajectory of Hazel Henderson's thoughts in the mid-1990s and her replies to Ross Perot's presidential campaign.

Thinking Globally, Acting Locally: The Politics and Ethics of the Solar Age
Hazel Henderson gave the Horace M. Albright Conservation Lecture at the University of California's Berkeley campus (3 March 1982). Henderson focuses on the breakdown of the industrial production system, the looming environmental crises and the errors of Reagonomics. An excellent overview of Henderson's core ideas and how she critiques the political process.

Hazel Henderson Interview
Hazel Henderson talks in this interview (December 1997) about Buckminster Fuller, risk management, international diversification, systemic risks to the global financial system and global regulatory bodies. This interview conveys how Henderson has influenced cutting-edge financial institutions.

Paraview A Global Acupuncturist Active in the World
In this interview with Alexander Drake (2001), Hazel Henderson explains why she became interested in environmentally sustainable societies, the Calvert-Henderson Quality of Life Indicators, scarcity economics, cultural comparisons between the US and Japan, the "care economy" and how to create a culture that honors individual wisdom.

Hazel Henderson on Taming the Shrewd Market
In this New Presence Magazine interview (December 2000) conducted by Anne Beck and Andrew Stroehlein, Hazel Henderson examines how information technology is transforming the balance of power between central bankers, commodity traders and countries. Other topics include the militia movement, reforming the media, global standards as tools to impose conformity and reflections on the Forum 2000 conference. "In terms of getting central banking in the world that works, I think that the American people wouldn't even weigh in on that debate. They just want it to work: it's just a technical thing, like the IMF. You see, they don't trust the Fed. It's really weird, because all those people out in the woods in the US, in militia movements, are the very ones who understand just how badly operated the Fed is. They happen to be right."

Hazel Henderson: Healthier Communities and Economism
Hazel Henderson explains her stance on "economicism" in this Healthcare Forum interview (1994): why the GNP and other leading macroeconomic indicators give a misguided view of communities and sustainable growth. "Some communities have fought the gap between macroeconomic indicators and the community reality by inventing alternative local currencies and systems of exchange. This is a leading indicator of the failure of the macroeconomic system."

Discovering What Works: A Conversation With Hazel Henderson
In this Healthcare Forum Journal (September/October 1994) interview conducted by Joe Flower, Hazel Henderson outlines her "anti-economics" and "economicism". Henderson explains why she became an activist in the 1960s, locally-appropriate measures, an initiative in Jacksonville (Florida), the vagueness of "the business climate", hidden values in macroeconomic indicators and community-based initiatives.

Hazel Henderson: Economics In The Solar Age
This Sustainability interview (Spring 1990) conducted by Alan AtKisson reveals what happened after the media discovered "the environment" in 1990. Henderson details the formation of the South Economic Summit (with fifteen member nations) as an initiative to change the North-South divide. She suggests that her Quality of Life Indicators, if supported by a media campaign, could help to galvanize a new form of US politics. What "full cost pricing" would resemble and why "level playing fields" don't exist in neoliberal thought.

Preventing War and Global Recession: Change Globalization to a Win-Win Game
Hazel Henderson's essay (September 2001) warns of a US recession and expresses solidarity with the protesters and strategists who warned, prior to the 9/11 attacks, that America needed to rethink its military policies and shift resources to Humint ("human intelligence"). "These change-the-game strategies should be heeded and implemented before knee-jerk military strikes kill more poverty stricken innocents, whether in Afghanistan or in the wider conflict, and more terrorist attacks. Eye-for-an-eye dogmas belong to history — not the 21st century."

Mr. Bush's Win-Win Option
Hazel Henderson's essay (September 2001) outlines some "win-win" options for President George W. Bush to build a truly global coalition to curb terrorism in the wake of the 9/11 attack. Henderson's ideas include paying back UN debt, a Summit on Terrorism, ratifying global treaties, working with INTERPOL and taking a multilateral stance. A viewpoint on the options not taken.

Hazel Henderson: Global Networks
This article by Hazel Henderson appeared in Toward A Sustainable World Order (Fall 1993). Henderson explains how citizen groups and NGOs can play a key role in creating a sustainable society.

Scott London: Building A Win-Win World
Scott London summarizes Hazel Henderson's book Building A Win-Win World (Berrett-Koehler Publishers, 1996). London praises Henderson’s attack on "economicism" and abstract social indicators, her "quality of life" discussions with grassroots movements, and her insights on how to transform surveys and national dialogue. An introduction to why Henderson is known as America's most prominent alternative economic thinker.

Scott London: Paradigms In Progress
Scott London summarizes Hazel Henderson's book Paradigms In Progress (Indianapolis: Knowledge Systems, 1991). London outlines the basics of futurist thinking and sustainable economics, then examines the influence of Warren Bennis and Philip Slater on Henderson's work, how systems can reform democracy and the problems of policy-making. "In addition to the subjects already noted, she explores the population crisis, the widening gap between the world's haves and have-nots, gender inequality, acid rain and space debris, and the drive to develop renewable energy resources."
