no pill for the gulf war ill
by Preston Peet (PTPEET@cs.com) - October 18, 2000
Did the US Government intentionally give 'Pyridostigmine Bromide' (PB) to nearly 250 000 US troops (and other Allied troops as well) because it was expected that Saddam Hussein would use the nerve agent 'Soman'? Or was it to test the long-term effects of this 'investigational new drug'? Did the FDA approve a waiver of the requirement for 'informed consent' because they knew it was dangerous to give to the troops, and wanted to avoid troublesome explanations, or to minimize the paper trail? How many of the myriad 'Gulf War Illnesses' (GWI) is PB responsible for?

All these questions were posed at the latest hearings on GWI held November 16 1999, ostensibly to look into the recent 'RAND Center for Military Health Policy Research' report which has concluded that there is inconclusive proof that PB causes GWI. The hearings distract us from another equally important but unasked question: Where did Iraq get the 'Soman' that the Allied Forces were expecting would be used on them?

The US government has a long history of bending regulations on trade items that are strictly controlled and watched, often allowing multi-national corporations and certain key individuals to sell technology and goods to countries that are either totalitarian, repressive, supportive of terrorism, or even at war with the US (as in the case of Germany during the Second World War). George Bush was involved in many suspicious deals whilst serving as both President and Vice-President, and even went to war to apparently shut down the players in two instances at least (Panama and Iraq).

On ABC News 'Nightline' (June 9 1992), Ted Koppel intoned the words: "It is becoming increasingly clear that George Bush, operating largely behind the scenes throughout the 1980s, initiated and supported much of the financing, intelligence, and military help that built Saddam's Iraq into the aggressive power that the United States ultimately had to destroy."

London's 'Financial Times' newspaper was publishing reports as far back as 1989 that Washington was enabling Iraq to build up a massive military force. The 'Financial Times' quoted many senior officials of the 'International Monetary Fund', one of whom asserted that Washington had "allowed and abetted the development and stockpiling of a major chemical warfare capability" in Iraq. 'Hewlett-Packard', 'Tecktronix' and 'Matrix Churchill' (all companies either US-based or with subsidiary operations) were named as suppliers of precursor chemicals and of other dual-purpose technologies.

The 'Los Angeles Times' (February 23 1992) reported: "Classified documents obtained by the Times show . . .a long secret pattern of personal efforts by Bush - both as President and as Vice-President - to support and placate the Iraqi dictator." The 'Los Angeles Times' article cited a top-secret National Security decision directive signed by President Bush in 1989, that ordered closer ties to Baghdad, and paved the way for US$1Billion in new aid to Iraq. This directive was enforced even as most international bankers were cutting off all loans to Iraq in light of their inability to pay off previous loans, precisely because Hussein was pouring money into buying more US arms.

There are over 100 research projects looking into Gulf War Illness, and at least 26 looking into PB itself. How many are investigating where Iraq got the chemical and biological weapons that Allied Forces Commanders were so worried about that they would intentionally give such a dangerous 'investigative drug' to its own soldiers?

Alarms were going off the during the entire conflict in the Gulf, signaling chemical exposure. They should be going off now signaling:

"Government/Military Cover-up Still Going On!"

Buffers, Biological Manufacturers, And Suppliers
Somehow I don't think this is how the Iraqi's built up their stockpile, but here is a comprehensive listing of over 100 000 chemical and biological suppliers around the world.

Harvard Sussex Program On CBW Armament and Arms Limitation
Here is a list of articles on Chemical and Biological Warfare from 1990 to 1999, many of which focus on the Middle East, including Iraq. Good for research sources.

Get The Iraq-gate Cabal
Call for 'justice' in getting those responsible for milking the US taxpayers out of billions of dollars over credit guarentees to Iraq. Briefly mentions the dual-purpose transfers of technology to Iraq as well.

Secret Message From James Baker To Tariq Aziz
Here is the text of the secret message sent from the Secretary of State Baker to Iraqi Foreign Minister Aziz, telling Aziz that Bush wanted to "strengthen ties to Baghdad . . .whenever possible," scarcely a year after Iraq had gassed Kurdish villages, and not long before the Gulf War itself. Baker also alludes to the 'Savings & Loan' debacle, saying that while there are serious issues that have been raised which have been holding up the loans, the Bush administration is doing all it can to hurry them along.

Biological Weapons Shipment To Iraq
This Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs press release specifically speculates on the possible relationship between these shipments and Gulf War related illness.

Freedom For Iraq
Here is a pro-Iraq site, that for all intents and purposes is a propaganda site for the Iraqis, who are justifiably upset at the US and its allies, which is reason enough to take it with a grain of salt, as bitter people are renowned for hysterical accusations. Still, there is enough evidence of misbehavior on the part of Bush's cronies to take a look. The US is still continuing Bush's trade embargo policies on the Iraqi children. Great pictures of a horned Clinton at the end, along with the 'Diablo' guy from the video game of the same name.

Chemical & Biological Weapons Used Against Iraq
Here is another Iraqi propaganda site, with all kinds of accusations against the Allied Coalition (US, Britain, France) using Biological and Chemical weapons on Iraq. Also gets into the Depleted Uranium used during the Gulf conflict, and which still lies in the Iraq desert.

Is The US Waging Germ Warfare On Iraq?
The idea promoted here is that by destroying a factory that had produced vaccines, the CIA penetrated UNSCOM had intentionally destroyed the Iraqi's only defense against Hoof and Mouth Disease, virtually eradicated in Iraq until appearing just recently. "Biological warfare can include the use of bacteria, rikettsia, viruses, and toxins to induce illness or death in humans, animals, and plants," wrote USAF Col. Robert P. Kadlek in a recent document entitled 'Biological Weapons for Waging Economic Warfare,' which mentions specifically targeting Third World countries, according to this site.

Microbiology 101: Biological Weapons, Malignant Biology
A site that goes into minute detail on the history of Biological Warfare, and discusses at length the pros and cons of using such weapons. Mentions Iraq producing mass amounts of certain chemicals, and also how the US had 3,000 scientists working during W.W.II and the Cold War on biological weapons. Lots of information on Biological Warfare itself, but not too much on the US supplying Iraq.

Iraq Special Weapons, Nuclear, Chemical, Biological, Missile Proliferation News 1994
A bit dated, but there are some illuminating pieces here about the Iraqi weapons programs, and how it got to where it is today.

Looking For Other Civilians Who Have Contracted GWI
This is a notice form a US Navy veteran who has come down with what he suspects is Gulf War Illness through his contact with soldiers coming home. He was never in the Gulf, but was in contact with hundred of soldiers during his job as a taxi driver, driving them out of Philadelphia International Airport. He is seeking others who are also afflicted without having been to the Gulf. This is quite frightening to think that the troops brought it back home with them when they returned from their romp in the desert.

Department of Central Intelligence Gulf War Illness Task Force
Documents on GWI released by the CIA, as well as many other documents on the GWIs. Can you trust anything put out by the Government on this subject, after years of lying about its very existence?

Commonly Asked Questions Regarding Gulf War Illness
Not a mention of US help in getting the biological and chemical weapons to Iraq that 'Operation: Desert Storm' troops were probably exposed to, but this is one very informative and helpful site for anyone who needs information on GWI itself.

Foreign Suppliers To Iraq's Biological Weapons Program
There is an incredibly long list of the various shipments of precursor materials to produce the biological and chemical warfare weapons in Iraq's stockpile. The US was instrumental in helping Iraq and Hussein build up their massive supplies of these weapons that Bush used to scare most of the world into backing his mad, evil rampage called 'Operation: Desert Storm'. This site will blow your mind if you are not already aware of the number and true nature of these shipments.

Gulf War Syndrome
I believe that those who are sick prefer the appellation Gulf War Illness, but some of these sites still are using the label Syndrome, which unfortunately conjures up an image of something possibly imagined. Still, this is a great site, with a collection of articles on US knowledge that there was something to the complaints of veterans of the Gulf conflict, years before ever coming close to admitting it.

White House Sets New Rules For Use of Investigational New Drugs
Revelations that the US Department of Defence (DoD) takes on responsibility for testing out new, unapproved drugs on US troops. DoD jurisdiction covers situations where no safe testing has been done before, and if the administration decides that there is a pre-existing need for the untested drugs. Voluntarily or involuntarily, the troops will take the drugs they are given. The new policy is not that much different than the old policy.

New Research On Gulf War Syndrome
"More than $100 million dropped by the government on researching Gulf War Syndrome has only resulted in half a dozen useful academic papers," states a researcher in this ABC.com article. Be sure to click on the interactive button in the photo of US troops sitting in Chemical Warfare suits for a timeline of the Gulf War Syndrome.

Breaking News: Gulf War Illness
This Insight magazine article (April 3, 2000) reveals that researchers have found 'strange' antibodies related to Squalene in the blood of Gulf War era veterans, both those who went to the Gulf, and those who did not, across all racial and gender lines. It appears that now the US Department of Defence has changed their Web site to show that they have never used Squalene in any shots given to soldiers and other military personnel, while up until now the Pentagon has simply called all reports showing Squalene as garbage, and wrong. Now they just deny using the adjuvant, which is a substance which forces medication to work faster, and supposedly better. The only approved adjuvant at this point is Alum. Squalene would only be used in "cutting edge research" if on human subjects. Only, the US military is known for doing things just like this, experimenting on its own soldiers. It wouldn't be the first time, and probably not the last!
