noam chomsky
by i.d. (id@disinfo.com) - February 04, 2002
It is the responsibility of intellectuals to speak the truth and to expose lies.
~~ Noam Chomsky

"To confront a mind that radically alters our perception of the world is one of life's most unsettling yet liberating experiences. Unsettling because it can undercut carefully constructed rationales, liberating because at last the obvious is seen for what it is. However troubling reality may be, human dignity is not affirmed in fleeing it. Rather dignity lies in see reality for what it isand acting responsibly in the face of it. In all of American history, no one's writings are more unsettling than Noam Chomsky's. He is among our greatest dissenters. No intellectual tradition quite captures his voice; thinking within traditions is anathema to him. No party claims him; he is spokesperson for no ideology. His position is not a liberalism become radical, or a conservatism in revolt against the betrayal of cherished principles. It is an indication of the radical nature of his dissent that it fits nowhere."
~~ James Peck, introduction to The Chomsky Reader (New York: Pantheon Books, 1987).

Z Net
Z Net houses Z Magazine on-line, Leftist and Liberarian cultural archives, political reportage and the awesome Noam Chomsky archive.

Noam Chomsky: Honest Reporter from Mars
Freespeech.org archived Noam Chomsky's keynote speech (23 January 2002) to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR). Chomsky spoke on the US-Afghanistan conflict and the global arms trade industry. 57 minutes. Free RealVideo player required.

The Netizen: Noam Chomsky Interview
This Netizen interview (February 1997) features some interesting comments by Noam Chomsky about free speech and the Internet. "If you assume that there's no hope, you guarantee there will be no hope. If you assume that there is an instinct for freedom, there are opportunities to change things."

Contolling the Public Mind
WorkingTV has archived two programs taped at Noam Chomsky's March 1996 Vancouver lecture. 57 minutes. Free RealVideo player required.

Prominent Anarchists and Left-Libertarians
A 10 minute history lesson, placing Noam Chomsky in a cultural context with other Anarchist and Libertarian philosophers such as Bakunin, Alexander Berkman and Emma Goldman.

The Khmer Rouge Canon 1975-1979
This on-line doctoral thesis attempts to debunk efforts by many Western scholars. Author Sophal Ear claims that "professional sophist" Noam Chomsky, and his colleague Edward Hermann, have attempted to undermine allegations of widespread atrocities ordered by Cambodian communist despot Pol Pot. Read Ear's thesis, consider the evidence presented and decide for yourself.

Retro Chomsky? A Visit to FAIR's 15th Birthday Party
This Alternet article (31 January 2002) by Don Hazen covers Noam Chomsky's keynote speech at Fairness and Accuracy In Media's fifteenth anniversary. Hazen parallels Chomsky's presentation with Phil Donohue and Danny Schechter, the post 9/11 environment, and wonders if Chomsky is still relevant.

Noam Chomsky, Wartime Media Hero
This Alternet article (10 December 2001) by Norman Solomon praises Noam Chomsky's geopolitical analysis and war reportage in the post 9/11 world.
