futures research: engineering human consciousness
by Alex Burns (alex@disinfo.com) - July 08, 2001
The Trilateral Commission. The United Nations. The World Bank. The World Trade Organization. NASA.

Conspiriology literature is filled with theories concerning vast conspiracies promoted by shadowy nefarious institutions beyond the view of Jane Public. Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm Institute and Britain's Tavistock Institute of Human Relations feature prominently in books on mind control and engineering human consciousness. While specific reality tunnels and conspiracies are hotly debated, there can be no doubt that there is a vast amount of post-World War II research drawn from the communications sciences, psychoanalytical schools, linguistics, cybernetics, anthropology, complex adaptive systems and scenario planning, that can be used to influence a dumbed down or uninformed general population.

In America, 1960s upheavals like the Vietnam War and the Counterculture 'radicalized' segments of society who questioned institutional truths. Philosophers such as Herbert Marcuse and Michel Foucault highlighted new configurations of power/knowledge dichotomies, including possible conspiracies that would not require a centralized Illuminati-style cabal.

SRI International and Big Sur's Esalen Institute introduced relativistic thinking structures designed to liberate Humanity from greed and dogma. Consensus decision-making, harmonious spirituality and enlightening self-exploration were highly valued. The Aquarian Conspiracy memeplex popularised by Willis Harman and Marilyn Ferguson stressed many of these values.

During the 1990s, institutionalized futures research came under fire. Wired magazine was linked to the Global Business Network think-tank, which caused many people to question the Digital Age's fountain of wisdom. Shifting geo-political complexities questiond many underlying assumptions and highlighted the danger when futurists like John Naisbitt and Alvin Toffler became part of the political process and resource allocation. Paradoxically, conspiriology became increasingly influenced by Grand Unified Theories created by David Icke, William Cooper and others.

Good conspiriology models are based upon solidly researched institutional analysis, and an appreciation of the circumstances, people, places and times (Life Conditions). Many researchers mention Britain's Tavistock Institute, but few offer indepth study of their leading therapists RD Laing and Wilfred Bion. Similarly, writers focusing upon structural dislocation aren't always very clear about how to culture-jam the geo-political matrix. This trend needs to change.

Club of Rome
The Club of Rome became infamous for Donna Meadow's seminal Limits to Growth: A Report for the Club of Rome on the Predicament of Mankind (New York: Universe Books, 1972). The computer modelling had errors, but the connection between diabolical world domination and futures-research had already become implanted in the public consciousness.

Die Off
"The human species may be seen as having evolved in the service of entropy, and it cannot be expected to outlast the dense accumulations of energy that have helped define its niche. Human beings like to believe they are in control of their destiny, but when the history of life on Earth is seen in perspective, the evolution of Homo sapiens is merely a transient episode that acts to redress the planet's energy balance." An intriguing collection of discussion papers and links, ranging from energy supply cycles and population patterns to underlying economic models and scientific consensus.

Millennials Rising: The Next Great Generation
