adam parfrey
by Alex Burns (alex@disinfo.com) - May 29, 2001
Adam Parfrey is probably the most influential 'underground' publisher in post-millennial America. If you are a fan of film-maker Ed Wood; have read the biting social commentary of Church of Satan founder Anton Szandor LaVey, or witnessed the contemporary revival of 1950s burlesque culture, you have been touched by the singular mind of Adam Parfrey.

In the early 1980s, Parfrey helped pioneer the National Socialism/Social Realism aesthetic with EXIT magazine (later used by industrial band Laibach).

He co-founded Amok Press with Ken Swezey and published the spectacular early Amok Dispatch sourcebooks, but split to form his own company Feral House Publishers.

Parfrey is best known for his seminal anthology Apocalypse Culture (1987, 1990), hailed by J.G. Ballard as a collection of "the terminal documents of the Twentieth Century," and Cult Rapture (1995).

These volumes are incredibly unique Environmental Scans of the fin-de-siecle madness which would later engulf Western technocratic society, featuring non-mainstream perspectives and packed with a wealth of genuine sociological data on the extremes of the human psyche.

They established Parfrey's critical reputation, and received accolades from X-Files creator Chris Carter, actor Crispin Glover and serial killer Richard Ramirez.

Under Parfrey's guiding hand, Feral House Publishers has published some truly seminal volumes, including the Danny Casolaro-inspired magnum opus The Octopus (1997) by Kenn Thomas and Jim Keith; Secret and Suppressed (1993) by Jim Keith; and Lords Of Chaos (1998) by Michael Moynihan.

"As time went on, I keep thinking that you can get to the bottom of human behavior, that it can never get any more sordid or pathetic. But I was always wrong," revealed Parfrey, regarding his decision to publish the eagerly awaited Apocalypse Culture II (2000), which features material by Robert Sterling, George Petros, Crispin Glover, Jack Sargeant and others.

In the wake of the original Apocalypse Culture, media viruses and malignant memes have flourished, becoming the new mainstream. Corporate religions propagate, advertising induces consensus trance. The world needs the brooding satire and savage wit of Adam Parfrey as an antidote to mass hallucination, now more than ever.

The views expressed above represent the writer and not necessarily those of The Disinformation Company Ltd.

This Reason Magazine book review of two books on the Militia movement by American Jewish Committee's Kenneth Stern and Southern Poverty Law Center's Morris Dees quotes Adam Parfrey as a militia 'expert' in it opening line, and then ignores his insights, presumably because they were too apocalyptic or 'underground' for this publication.
