Defined by some as 'dysfunctional,' by themselves as 'persecuted,' the followers of Yahweh Ben Yahweh (the 'Nation of Yahweh') believe him to be the Black Christ. Currently, their Messiah is serving 18 years in America's worst prison under violations of the RICO Act, including the murder of fourteen people (due for a 2006 release). The FBI also alleges the group was preparing to bomb several federal buildings, and that Yahweh (naming himself the 'Son of God') was fond of underage female church-members. Born Hulon Mitchell, Jr., (October 27th, 1935), Yahweh and his organization owns grocery stores, motels, beauty shops, apartments, a school with anti-white curriculumn for black children, and a 'Temple of Love'.
Throw in an under-reported 1992 conviction of former 'National Football League' player Robert Rozier for murder (stabbing one white victim to death in a ritual sacrifice) and a weekly television program featuring a three-minute sermon given by Yahweh himself from the prison cafeteria pay telephone and you have truth, truly stranger than fiction.
The weekly thirty-minute program, shown in most major cities on local access channels, features a short dialogue of incomprehensible numerology; commercials for books and tapes to aid seekers; the sermon (a voice over a Yahweh picture with blue eyes and a turban) with the noise of inmates dining from metal prison plates; and funky graphics/music. The tone is light and pleasant, if difficult to follow.
The Federal Government, incapable of honesty in the eyes of Yahweh's faithful, claims that he engaged in coercion, torture and embezzlement, directing his 'Black Angels' to murder 'white devils' and blacks that opposed efforts to collect funds. They charged Yahweh and some twelve co-defendants with violations of the RICO Act (designed to tackle enterprises involved in "patterns of racketeering"). After losing the Federal (but not the actual state murder case) trial, Yahweh began residence at 'Lewisburg Federal Prison'; immediately, the courtroom frolics began in earnest. Charging that the Florida penal system prevented him and other followers from accessing sacred texts and books prepared by the 'Temple of Love', one case followed another. From the government's perspective, these lawsuits (six total over seven years) were in regard to materials amounting to criminally racial anti-white manifestos threatening to undermine already tense prison security.
Eventually, the RICO conviction appeal was lost, with the decision featuring a 24-page condemnation of each of the defenses' arguments. In it, the courts detail the 1986 firebombing of a Del-Ray Beach, Florida nightspot, attributed to Yahweh's 'Angels of Death'; the decision recounted that the building was torched and the 'Angels of Death' waited outside with swords and machetes to kill those trying to flee the blaze.
The 'Yahwehs', on the other hand, believe that their leader has been chosen for 'Judicial Crucifixion' paralleling the crucifixion of the 'other' Christ. They claim he suffered cruel indignities, and compare Robert 'Lying Bob' Rozier to the Biblical Judas, giving up Yahweh to slaughter in return for a reduced sentence on a 'guilty' plea to four murders (he actually confessed to seven). Further, the 'Nation of Yahweh' claims that I AM WHAT I AM (a literal translation of the Hebrew characters Yahweh uses to identify himself) has been illegally prosecuted and the US Government has committed witness tampering and perjury during the ten year legal battles.
Convicted murderer Rozier, once protected by the 'Federal Witness Protection Program' for his testimony against his former associates, has been arrested and charged with cheque fraud? Mr. 'Rameses' (Rozier's FWPP alias) claims his life is now threatened because his identity has been leaked. California authorities were seeking to keep Rozier in prison for life under the 'three strikes' ordinance. You can get a reduced sentence for murder, but two bad cheques totalling under US$130 puts you in for life!
