by Alex Burns (alex@disinfo.com) - December 16, 2000
The success of The Blair Witch Project (1999) might have taken Hollywood executives by surprise, boosting interest in all-digital film productions and low-budget chic, but film-maker Craig Baldwin has explored the conspiriologist edge of America's fin-de-siecle culture for over two decades.

Baldwin studied at the 'University of California' (Santa Barbara), 'University of California' (Davis), and 'San Francisco State University', receiving an MA in 1986. He had already created two films by then: 'Wild Gunman' (1978)and 'RocketKitKongoKit' (1986) combined 'musique concrete' soundtracks and hyper-speed 'found' footage, deconstructing Imperialist ideologies with humor and precision. Baldwin drew upon a wide variety of 'Culture Jamming' techniques from the 'Situationist International', the Surrealist and Dadaists art-schools, and collage methods adopted from underground film.

'Tribulation 99: Alien Anomalies Under America' (1991) remains Baldwin's most well-known film - foreshadowing conspiriologist Jonathan Vankin's description of the 1990s as the 'Decade of Conspiracy'. Lampooning paranoid conspiracy theories, CIA 'Black Ops' campaigns, and environmental devastation, Baldwin's film blends satire with fantasy, revisionist history with moral outrage. 'Tribulation 99' featured a hypnotic score by Yma Sumac.

'O No Coronado!' (1992) was a dark open-ended political fable exhuming the 1540 European invasion of the American South-west at a time when self-congratulatory 'dubious triumphalism' dominated America's mediascape; the 'SF Foundation' subsequently awarded Baldwin the '1992 James D. Phelan Award in Film Art'.

With 'Sonic Outlaws' (1995), Baldwin again stretched the envelope, creating a definitive film on contentious copyright issues surrounding the highly publicized Negativland/U2 law-suit, and examining 'Culture Jamming' rebels such as the 'Tape-beatles' and the 'Barbie Liberation Foundation'. Baldwin's film highlighted the irony of U2 hiring the 'Emergency Broadcast Network' to work on their 'ZooTV' tour (1991-93), whilst retaining his Anarchist/Fuzzy Logic perspective.

By the time of 'Specters of the Spectrum' (1999), agitprop had become increasingly popular as a revolutionary protest technique, but few could match Baldwin's stunning critique of the electro-magnetic/media arms race unleashed by Cold War geo-politics. Baldwin showed again that he was a master of surfing the dissipative edge of chaos, the underground film-making equivalent to rap music DJs and samplers.

If you want to understand the undercurrent that political analyst Richard Hofstadter once described as the 'Paranoid Style of American Politics', Craig Baldwin's fragmentary but obsessive Vision is an invaluable guide.

Written for the 'Open Pamphlet Magazine Series' in 1993, Mark Dery's seminal essay explores culture jamming and agitprop within the Empire of Signs by a cyberculture critic who did much to popularise the term. Dery describes culture jamming as: media hacking, information warfare, terror-art, and guerrilla semiotics, all in one. Billboard bandits, pirate TV and radio broadcasters, media hoaxers, and other vernacular media wrenchers who intrude on the intruders, investing ads, newscasts, and other media artefacts with subversive meanings are all culture jammers.
