joe firmage
by Alex Burns (alex@disinfo.com) - December 16, 2000
Born on October 26th, 1970, Joe Firmage rocked Silicon Valley just over twenty-eight years later with the release of 'The Truth', a personal manifesto which included investigation of UFO phenomena (including the 'MJ-12' documents debacle), and future development of technologies such as 'zero-point' energy and anti-gravity devices.

To observers, Firmage's career showed little signs on the surface of his personal philosophy. Educated at University of Utah (Physics), Firmage was a prodigious learner. Launched in April 1989, Firmage's company Serius Corporation was purchased by Novell in June 1993 for US$23 million (the '23 Skidoo' synchronicity infilatrates venture capitalism!). In summer of 1995, Firmage left Novell and co-founded USWeb (Chairman and CEO), which was in the process of merging with CKS Group Inc before Firmage's revelations in 1998.

Initially dubbed the 'Kairos' project, Firmage's manifesto was inspired by an anomalous experience in 1997 that Firmage claimed was an alien visitation concerning future exploration. It attracted extremely negative reactions from the US press, which compared Firmage to Church of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, and 'X-Files' protagonist Fox Mulder (highlighting how irrational New Age icons and fearful Cult Awareness cliques have narrowed the options for publicly debating contemporary spirituality), and made much of his family's Mormon religious heritage.

Firmage resigned from 'USWeb' and subsequently founded 'IntendChange', an Internet-oriented venture capital company, and 'International Space Sciences Organization', devoted to raising awareness of future technological breakthroughs, consciousness, and future civilizations.

Directly inspired by Carl Sagan's epic PBS series 'Cosmos' (1980), Firmage is part of the SDI generation imprinted with the films 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' (1978) and 'Star Wars' (1978). In his masterful book 'Children of Ezekiel: Aliens, UFOs, The Crisis of Race and the Advent of Time' (Duke University Press, 1998), scholar Michael Lieb links SDI and pop UFOlogy metaphysics to new political movements and emerging technological subcultures. Firmage's integral views can be considered a progressive example of this 'meta-system transition' underlying the American political landscape.

The irony about his treatment by pressured Silicon Valley investors is that former President Jimmy Carter is amongst those who claim to have seen UFOs, and Hollywood had made millions just years earlier with 'ID4' (1994).

Firmage has continued to make inroads into NASA and the Space Migration community. Recently he has been in intensive dialogue with nanotechnology specialist Creon Levitt and integral theorist Ken Wilber, and worked on projects designed to harness multimedia for global online classrooms. A proven survivor in the nanosecond Silicon Valley ratrace, Joe Firmage will be around for far longer than anticipated, propagating messages designed to truly revolutionize your socio-political consciousness.
