5.5.2000
by Alex Burns (alex@disinfo.com) - May 29, 2001
Many Catastrophism theorists shy away from specific dates, but in the cult classic 5/5/2000: Ice: The Ultimate Disaster (1982), Richard Noone created a memorable scenario of thousand-foot waves engulfing nations.

No, it wasn't a cheesy 1970s disaster movie, but the scenario sounds like one. Noone is a Survivalist who lives in Ellijay, a town in the mountains of north Georgia, and he contended that a planetary alignment on 5/5/2000 would set-off a maelstrom (the melting of the three mile high Antarctic ice cap) that would wipe out three-quarters of the human race. When Crown Publishers re-released his book in 1997, concerned New Agers and conspiriologists catapulted him into best-seller lists. Many were also intrigued by Noone's analysis of how the Great Pyramid had been built.

An urban legend to some, a malignant meme spreading out of control to others, Noone's 5/5/2000 catastrophe may be fiction, but his dystopian worldview will make you reconsider such real-life anomalies as the HAARP Project and weather experimentation in a new light.

The views expressed above represent the writer and not necessarily those of The Disinformation Company Ltd.
