| No movement is dependent on one person, and if it is, it's not a movement. The fact that it's going to go on stronger and better without me - I think that's good. Everyone contributes, but no-one is essential. ~ ~ Judi Bari. "She was a born leader who strived for consensus, a carpenter who wanted to save trees, a karate expert who opposed all forms of violence, and a joker who didn't see the funny side of desperately serious issues." On May 24th, 1990, environmental activist Judi Bari and her colleague Darryl Cherney were the victims of a still unsolved shrapnel car bomb attack that has divided the conspiriology community, and serves as a grim warning to activists that a counter-intelligence program (COINTELPRO) targetting domestic operations may be on the resurgence. Bari and her group Earth First! were key organizers in of Redwood Summer in 1990, an event designed to increase public awareness about the destruction of Californian redwood forests. Bari's charismatic leadership formed alliances between environmentalists, forest industry workers, and alternative media. She insisted on non-violence, as indicated by the Redwood Summer Code, which was drafted on May 13th, 1990: "We will use no violence, verbal or physical, towards any person; we will not damage any property; we will not bring firearms or any other weapons to an action or base camp." It was this combination of Bari's high profile, an emerging broad coalition, and non-violence which may have made Bari a prime target. According to subsequent court testimony by FBI agents and Oakland police, the FBI was conducting a bomb investigation training course during this period, under FBI special agent Frank Doyle. One exercise involved blowing up cars using pipe bombs. A sign of things to come? On May 24th, 1990, when Bari and Cherney left a meeting with loggers, a pipe bomb exploded under Bari's seat, dislocating her spine, and shattering her pelvis and cocyx. Mysteriously, Doyle arrived at the accident scene soon afterwards, and proceeded to arrest a barely conscious Bari, as well as Cherney. Bail was set at US$100 000, but after eight weeks the charges were dropped due to lack of evidence. Bari subsequently died of breast cancer in 1997, but there are many unanswered questions about the shrapnel car bomb attack that have obsessed conspiriologists. |
