C.O.S.T. was founded by forty-three middle school students who want to keep tobacco products out of the hands of children. They realize this is not an easy task. The tobacco companies are powerful, and they use their power to prey upon children. They must, if they are to stay in business, for almost everyone who smokes starts before the age of 18. The tobacco industry spends about 13 million dollars every day on advertising. Much of this money is spent on luring children into the deadly habit of smoking.
