anti-olympics protests 2000
by Alex Burns (alex.burns@disinfo.net) - October 18, 2000
The Sydney 2000 Summer Olympic Games media coverage has been dominated by evocative but pre-packaged images, from Nikki Webster's initiatory opening ceremony journey to sprinter Cathy Freeman's triumphant 400m race. Both brought Australia to a standstill. But there are plenty of stories that Seven (Australia's official Olympics television network), NBC and CNN don't want you to grok.

NBC's Pax Americana telecast overlooked a host nation divided along memetic fault-lines, focusing instead on 'negative' issues such as Romania's medal boycott, and the predictable spin-doctored doping scandals. What about Burma's participation, despite a military dictatorship notorious for its human rights abuses? Did NBC and the Sydney Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG) really need to censor the Australian youth radio network Triple J's streaming broadcasts to preserve its ratings hegemony?

To glimpse the 'real' Green Games, you must turn to activist and underground media. Groups such as the Anti-Olympic Alliance, Protest 2000, and People Ingeniously Subverting the Sydney Olympic Farce have been documenting the questionable business deals, environmental policy shortfalls, global 'selling' of indigenous Aboriginal culture, and last-minute legislation. Remember the street crackdown provisions of the Homebush Bay Area Act?

Branded 'un-Australian' during Melbourne's S11 protests, despite a long national history of subversive rebels, Cat@lyst, Sydney Indymedia, and Sydney Alternative Media Center activists have documented peaceful and non-violent anti-Olympics protests that would otherwise have ended up on the cutting-room floor.

The Sydney Games won't resolve overnight the historical wild-cards that plague Australia, from debate over its indigenous 'Stolen Generation' and mandatory sentencing policies to its lack of technological industry investment and growing Third World status (according to Council on Foreign Relations member and geopolitical strategist Samuel P. Huntington).

Dissent is swelling in Australia, but you wouldn't hear about it from CNN. Discover what NBC doesn't want you to know about, and Salon.com correspondents haven't uncovered yet. 'The Dream' is fast turning into an Olympics nightmare.

GoEureka
A leading Australian search-engine based on Altavista's technology.

The Locals Only Show
Gonzo street media for the disinformed generation. Features a program of Sydney street vox populi.

The Games
Part of Channel V (an Australian music television network). Storm their discussion forums and write some "weird gonzo shit."

Olympic Scandals
What Mistah Samaranch doesn't want you to know about.

Rentwatchers
Gripped by a rent and accommodation crisis even before it won the Olympic Games in 1993, Sydney's skyrocketing land prices have been a contentious issue. Rentwatchers "are a community coalition fighting for the protection of tenants, boarders and lodgers . . . Our aim is to lobby the Government to put protection plans in place so everyone gains from the Olympics."

Green Games Watch 2000
An independent environment organisation charged with reviewing the credentials, successes and failures of the so called 'green' games.

Anti-Olympics Alliance
The Anti-Olympics Alliance is opposed to the Olympic Games and is active in organising protests and events to highlight the negative impact of the games and the racism and social injustices in Sydney & Australia.

Cat@lyst
An incredible group of community activists who have built the media-monitoring infrastructure for the Australian Indymedia nodes.

Piss Off
People Ingenously Subverting The Olympic Farce brought to you by Cat@lyst: "Because Sydney was already in the grip of a housing crisis back in '93 when we 'won' the games, because increased police powers are a human rights issue, because billions of dollars that could have been spent improving health care, schools, urban design have been spent on a giant sports carnival, because elitism in sport sux, because of the way that the Olympics papers over all the divisions in Australian Society - we're all meant to be 'Aussies' together despite attacks on unions and racism and homelessness and unbreathable cities . . ."

Our Olympics
Part of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp empire, Our Olympics is a guide to sports coverage, 'manufacturing consent' style. Will Murdoch earn another $6.2 million this year?

Octapod
The Sydney Olympics opening ceremony featured thousands of Australian youth, but none so savvy as this 'culture jamming' posse.

Access News
Part of Melbourne's Channel 31, the weekly-produced Access News program will bring you highlights of "Anti-Olympics" culture jamming. If you like Michael Moore, RTMark, Adbusters, John Safran, or Noam Chomsky, this is definately the program for you.

Triple J
Australia's premier youth radio network presents hip Olympics 2000 coverage, and brings Australian artists to the world.

ABC Network
The government-owned Australian Broadcasting Network has been fighting for its survival because of funding cuts, but has a reputation for in-depth reportage and covering issues that commercial networks won't touch.

Sydney Morning Herald
Leveraging its global media conglomerate resources, Sydney Morning Herald is the best mainstream newspaper for Olympics coverage. Wide-ranging analysis of events, brought to you by the power of corporate sponsorship.

Seven Network
Australia's official television network for the Olympic Games, Seven's ulta-expensive site cries out for an RTMark.com parody (hint, hint!). Funnily, they don't mention that the two original presenters left the network under estranged circumstances just weeks before the telecasts.

NineMSN
1. An "industry corporate" collaboration between two of the world's most soulless media barons.
2. How to waste a lot of money on an expensive Web site.
3. Go to 1. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Ten Network
They didn't get the Olympics rights, so it's coverage of Oprah, Xena, and The Simpsons instead.

SBS Network
Run on shoestring budget, the government-owned Special Broadcasting Network covers multicultural issues and truly 'global' news (not just the US, England, the EC, and Japan). Lobby them to stream Dateline, Eat Carpet, and The Movie Show over the Internet.

3RRR
3RRR is one of Australia's most famous independent radio stations, featuring some of the most progressive content programing, despite prejudice, economic rationalism, censorship and ruinous competition. "Over 100 volunteer announcers present some 70 programs each week, while around 15 full-time and part-time staff, with assistance from volunteers, keep the station running."

Real Games: Covering The Sydney Olympics 2000
An incredible collection of alternative media news items and analysis about the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Offers a real parallax view to mainstream media sources. Highly recommended!

Shame 2000
Part biting satire, part stunning expose, Shame 2000 confronts the 'hot' sociopolitical issues which divide Australia: the 'Stolen Generation', uranium mining, environment and foreign policy disasters, and more.

Sydney Alternative Media Center
