aryan nation
by Alex Burns (alex@disinfo.com) - March 08, 2001
If you have read the Bible, you know that there is no peaceful solution.
~~ Richard Butler

Aryan Nations, also known as the Church of Jesus Christ Christian, was formed in the early 1940s. Regarded as the most prominent Christian Identity group in America by the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Southern Poverty Law Center, the early Aryan Nations members adhered to British Israel ideology: they were locked in a Manichean struggle with Jews, who embodied conscious evil. Members believed that America would be God's final battleground, and, that after a Racial Holy War (RAHOWA), they would prevail to found the New Jerusalem on Earth.

After the death of the founder in 1970, pastor Richard Butler became the group's leader, and in 1974 he moved the congregation to Hayden Lake, Idaho. Butler has claimed 400 US and 6000 worldwide members, but observers estimate the figure is between 150 and 200.

Butler networked with organizations, including members of the American Nazi Party, the Ku Klux Klan and the Worldwide Church of the Creator. He founded the Worldwide Aryan Congress in 1982, which is held each July. Butler has recruited his cadre from survivalist and militia groups (SWC's Morris Dees has alleged that Aryan Nations has infiltrated the milita/patriot community and embedded their aims into milita/patriot worldviews), Christian Constitutionalists, tax evaders, secessionists, anti-abortion activists and home-schoolers.

Aryan Nations gained media prominence throughout the mid-1980s via the actions of Robert Matthews, a disaffected member, who founded The Order and staged a series of daring robberies. Matthews was shot on December 9, 1984, during an FBI shootout in Washington DC. A 1985 trial of The Order sent twenty-five members to prison. Oliver Stone's 1988 film Talk Radio was inspired by The Order's murder of Jewish talkshow host Alan Berg outside his home in Denver, Colorado. The trial also brought William Pierce's white supremecist novel The Turner Diaries to public prominence, foreshadowing the Oklahoma City Bombing. Butler was tried for sedition charges in 1987, but was acquitted.

Aryan Nations members have also proposed the '10 Percent Solution': an Aryan enclave covering Pacific Northwest states. This hints at their enduring appeal: the resurgence of older nationalisms and racial fault-lines, as America makes the transition into a post-industrial economy.

Geopolitical theorists, from Thomas Friedman to Samuel P. Huntington, have proclaimed the arrival of a global economy. But they have not considered the impact that trans-national corporations will have upon domestic tranquility: Aryan Nations, and other white supremicist groups, survive in the cracks and fissures. Aryan Nations members, who have witnessed the hedonistic explosion of Hollywood and the migration of industrial jobs overseas, remind us through their fears and actions, that not everyone will benefit.

The lesson we can draw from Aryan Nations is not just the news reports of racialist skinheads and multi-million damages lawsuits. American culture and experience, to prosper in the 21st century, must be transformed out of racial and gender categories, which are the residue of the 19th century European intelligentsia.

We need new visions for the new millennium.

"The lyrics and images promoted by Resistance Records are not for the faint of heart or the excessively genteel. America's young people, especially in urban areas, are growing up in a multicultural sewer, abandoned by their elders, who are afraid of being considered "racist" or "anti-Semitic" if they protest. The more spirited of these young Americans and their counterparts in Europe express in their music -- resistance music -- their reaction to being forced to live in a sewer."
