danni ashe: sexing the new economy
by Alex Burns (alex@disinfo.com) - July 20, 2001
My Web site gets so much traffic, I use more bandwidth than all of Central America. That's a lot of downloading, so watch out, Guinness, because here I come!
~ ~ Danni Ashe

Unlike many Dotgone Economy CEOs, adult entertainment star Danni Ashe knows that the Rules of the Game haven't changed. Her insights about value creation and building online communities are eagerly sought after: Industry Standard magazine lists Ashe in its "Who's Who of the Internet Economy."

A compelling Founder's Story and some self-mythologizing sure helped: Ashe claims to have built her $7 million company "from $5,000 and an HTML class." 841 million downloads later, Ashe replaced Cindy Margolis, after a very public feud, as the Guinness Book of Records' "Most Downloaded Woman."

A report by Alexa Research found that Ashe's site had 25,490,000 page views, ranking 602 out of the 1100 most visited sites.

The feud generated a "swarm" effect that has made Ashe the reigning Queen of the New Economy. Ashe had the business sense to harness the insights of evolutionary psychology to understand her audience's desires and self-image. Ashe's site also harnesses Sex-Positive Culture aesthetics, in order to dispel Victorian morality and Freudian guilt about expressing our human sexuality.

A Reuters news report stated that Ashe was "the shrewdest of businesswomen who maintains control of every aspect of her company and runs it the way she sees fit."

These skills helped Ashe survive, unlike other high-profile "women's oriented" sites.

Ashe has also become the focus of concerns that the adult entertainment industry is linked to child pornography. She testified (on August 3, 2000) to the COPA Commission, the congressionally appointed panel that was mandated by the Child Online Protection Act.

"So many people see it in black and white. It's all or nothing," she told YourMVP. "You show a nipple and the next thing you know, you're a child pornographer."

She resisted the dark imagery that has driven these allegations, and thereby given the adult entertainment industry a bad name: "I don't want people to feel bad about themselves when they visit my Web site," she explained. "I just want people to have fun."

Danni's Hard Drive claims 3 million unique visitors a month, and 27,000 paying subscribers.
