disinformation: mark pesce chat transcript
by Mark Pesce and Chat Participants (mark@playfulworld.com) - November 10, 2002
replicantman: Do you think that our reliance on 'fetching' information rather than storing it will effect our ability to invent and create? i.e. not being able to build a microchip from scratch?

Mark Pesce: Good question. We're not going to be human encyclopedia's but people will become experts in the things they love so it's likely that someone, somewhere will know how to do something from scratch.

splitsplot:Where do you see the future of gaming going next. Once photorealism in graphics has been achieved with the graphics, what more can we expect to hold our interest?

Mark Pesce: We're going to start to see real story-telling and other people in our game environments, and probably games that start to confuse the boundaries of the real world and the world of the game.

ARCHER:Mark, what do you think of the vision present in Orwell's 1984?

Mark Pesce laughs

Mark Pesce: I think we need to be very careful to prevent global communication networks from becoming pan optic surveillance media. Barring that, we need to learn how to jam the media.

jamin: Do you think of yourself as a 'geek'?

Mark Pesce chuckles

Mark Pesce: One would answer, yes! Haha.

Moneyshot: You like comics, don't you, Mark. You must do.

Mark Pesce: Actually, I've only read a few of the modern comics, although the ones I have read I quite like. I'm a big fan of Grant Morrison. And Akira.

Rupert Breheny: Will the old generation get it, or do we just have to wait for them to die off?

Mark Pesce: Some of them will. Some will want to. Some won't have any patience with it. The question is, how much of a barrier will they represent? It is said that physics proceeds funeral by funeral.

warlock:WE all know that the technologies used in mainstream society are primitive compared to what is possible - and I hope you dont disgard this as a conspiracy theory, but do you think the governments of the world are keeping back loads of possibilities from us until they can more fully understand them?

Mark Pesce: Hmm . . . I think with as many scientists as are on the Internet sharing info, it would be difficult to keep major discoveries secret, because of the massive inter-dependency of the scientific community. But I'm not sure.
