An interview with Richard Thomas, author of the excellent book, PARA-NEWS — UFOs, Ghosts, Conspiracy Cryptids, and More — a collection of essays and interviews (with Nick Redfern, Nick Pope, and others) that first appeared on Binnall of America, UFO Mystic, Sci-Fi Worlds, and other venues. Interviewed by Henry Baum, author of the conspiracy novel, The American Book of the Dead.

Henry Baum: In your book, you frequently raise the specter of Alex Jones and his ideas on eugenics, the New World Order, and so on. Personally, I take some issue with Alex Jones for a few reasons, and I wonder if you could address them. The main thing that leaps out about Alex Jones is that he never raises the UFO issue — you actually interview someone at Infowars who seems pretty disinterested in the whole subject. This seems like a fairly impossible assertion to make — it’s pretty clear that there is something going on with the UFO issue, if only because the government explanation for many sightings is so suspiciously stupid. If that’s the case, and there is also a conspiracy to bring about a New World Order, then the two cannot be separated. When you look through at the NWO through the lens of the UFO issue then the NWO makes more sense – not just a way to aimlessly enslave us, but perhaps to make the population more controllable in the event of first contact. Do you think that’s a possibility?

Richard Thomas: I’ve been following Alex Jones off and on since about 2000 when I saw him in an episode of Jon Ronson’s “Secret Rulers of the World” series for Channel Four. He’s had a big impact on the way I see the world and interpret world events. However, I do agree that he is missing a huge piece of the puzzle by not looking at the UFO topic in more depth. That said, trying to get the average person to accept that the Bilderberg Group really does exist is hard enough … so I can understand why Alex Jones doesn’t cover the topic as much as UFO researchers would like him to.

More recently, however, I have noticed that Alex is talking about UFOs a lot more on his radio show. Here you can listen to him and David Icke talk about Project Blue Beam.

I myself believe that the globalists will use any crisis be it real or manufactured to further their goal of a one world government, be it global warming, terrorism, Colonel Gaddafi, or yes, UFOs.

A lot of UFO researchers tend to romanticize what they call “Disclosure”, the day when the world is finally told the truth (whatever that is) about what the US government and others really know about UFOs. I’m more cautious. I think if Disclosure ever really does occur (and that’s a big if) we have to be careful that the existence of extraterrestrials or whatever isn’t used as a justification to turn the world into a giant police state. Rahm Emanuel said “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste” and his words sum up the mentality of the globalists perfectly.

HB: I guess another way of saying this is that what he sees as nefarious might actually have a purpose. Granted, the way they’re going about globalization is a total nightmare. I just can’t shed the feeling that they have a grander plan than just profit or enslavement. I mean if you have a billion dollars, what’s 2 billion? Maybe they’re just addicts, I don’t know. But I also think all that profit might be going to black projects – sort of like the arks in the otherwise-terrible “2012″ movie. That’s not a way of excusing them, but just saying that there’s more purpose to this than enslavement for the hell of it. Of course, Hitler had a “purpose” too, so there’s a lot to be wary of. In sum: do you think it’s possible that a one world government could — in the very long term — potentially be positive?

RT: No, I don’t. Lets say just for the sake of argument that the globalists have a higher purpose of some kind for what they’re doing. Maybe they know about a fleet of marauding alien spaceships heading for Earth like in the film Independence Day or something like that, and the reason they want a world government and world army is so that the Earth will be able to defend itself against the alien invaders. That doesn’t change the fact that we’ll still be living inside a giant dictatorship created in stealth … maybe we would be better off under the aliens, lol.

But seriously even if the globalists were honest and open about what they were doing, and openly said they wanted to create a world government but it’s okay because it’s going to be a democratic one, I would still be very against the idea. I don’t believe something the size of a world government could function as a democracy and it wouldn’t be long before it became a dictatorship. Which is why I believe a world government and even the European Union are bad ideas to begin with.

HB: I’m playing devil’s advocate here a bit because the globalists have really tipped their hand about the kind of world they want and it’s a bad one. But for the sake of argument – say there was disclosure of an alien that was totally benign. Given the state of the world, releasing this info could be apocalyptic. If people get this upset about sharia law and illegal immigrants, what will the American public – let alone Middle Eastern terrorists – do with a literal alien? Seen through the lens of disclosure, the Patriot Act makes more sense. Not just to stop terrorism in 2011, but to keep an eye on the total global freakout that could be coming. I’m not longing for a police state or anything, but supposing 1% of what we know about the UFO is true — that amounts to a massive amount of world-changing information. Everything that’s happened — 9-11, the war in Iraq, and so on — takes on a new meaning. So I wonder if those romantics about disclosure would trade some of their liberty for the big reveal if it meant finally getting some answers to the UFO enigma.

What’s always troubled me is that people like Bush Sr. or Dick Cheney are the ones who are more likely to know the story behind UFO secrecy. There’s a strange alignment between UFO secrecy and right wing ideology. Do you think it’s possible to have disclosure without the world turning into a police state — given the impact it would have on religious ideology and technology?

RT: Well it depends what we’re told. Not everyone is convinced we’re dealing with aliens from outer space. But if we are I suppose if they were “totally benign” and no threat it is possible to have Disclosure without the world turning into a police state. But if they‘re not, no I don’t think it looks good. After 9/11 many people were willing to give up their civil liberties to fight a couple Islamic terrorists, imagine what they would be willing to do to combat a threat from outer space. But this is all just speculation.

HB: I also wonder about Jones’ ideas on Christianity. In his Bohemian Grove video, he points out that the men are sinister because they worship “the occult.” He’s even targeted Peter Joseph of “Zeitgeist” for being part of the New Age conspiracy, as if Christianity is the one true faith. If you watch “Zeitgeist” or “The God Who Wasn’t There” it’s pretty clear that the story of Christianity is fabricated. So Alex Jones believes in many conspiracies except one of the biggest: the fabrication of the Jesus story. Personally, I’d rather there be a universal religion than saying this one book (which advocates stoning heretics, among other things) is the be all end all of religious principles. What’s your view of spirituality as it pertains to the NWO, or even to UFOs?

RT: There’s no question that early Christianity was hijacked by the Roman Empire. Christmas is as about as Christian as Halloween, December 25 was an important day to pagans. But I still celebrate it and I believe everyone has the right to believe, think, say, or do as they please as long as they don’t knowingly lie or physically try to hurt anybody else.

HB: Finally, I wonder about things like population control. Studying population growth is not the same thing as advocating genocide, nor is advocating birth control. Planned Parenthood isn’t evil — as he says in “Endgame” (which you reference). The Bilderberg conference might be totally sinister, but on the surface a bunch of powerful people all getting together to discuss the state of the world makes sense — why wouldn’t they do that? I’m not even going to get into Global Warming science, as that’s so loaded. I guess I never see in him any possible solutions — just a lot of paranoia about people who are looking for solutions. Certainly, some of these people are evil, but not all. Plainly our world is disordered, so people looking for a (lowercase) new world order might not all be dangerous.

I’m beginning to sound like a fat-cat apologist. It absolutely pisses me off that Obama and Bush are so identical and the wealthy elite are profiting off the backs of everyone else and raping the planet. They really seem to be sowing the seeds of disorder, rather than sustainability. If you’re not paranoid, you’re not paying attention. Jones’ answer is to support Ron and Rand Paul — which I don’t see as feasible. Giving corporations even more power via deregulation isn’t the solution — i.e. Big Business isn’t any better than Big Government. So I’m wondering what your ideal system would be, politically or economically.

RT: Well my main problem with the Bilderberg Group is that most people have never even heard about them. I don’t think that many powerful people should be allowed to meet in secret once a year and nothing be said about it in the media. Thankfully because of the hard work of dedicated researchers and activists around the world that is starting to change.

I get what you’re saying about birth control etc, but there’s no question that population reduction seems to be a big part of the globalist agenda. You just have to look at the comments of people like Prince Philip or Ted Turner and others.

What kind of system would I like?

First I think its important to stress I don’t believe in Utopia. There’s no such thing, you’ll never have a perfect world and every attempt at creating one has always led to mass slaughter and tyranny. I think we need to recognize that first.

I think the founders of the United States had some good ideas. Things like a written constitution that protected the freedom of speech and other rights of the people, and an educated, informed public who could understand what that constitution said. Now, of course, even the early United States had its problems, slavery being a big one. But I think that’s a good place to start. But if readers want to disagree with me … great … it’s called freedom. Hopefully we can all agree on that.

Unanswered Questions Surround Bin Laden Death

Yesterday the New York Times ran a story entitled “The Persistence of Conspiracy Theories,” the essence of which was that “those who doubt Mr. Obama’s citizenship fit the mold of other conspiracy theorists: they don’t loose their grip on their beliefs easily, if at all.”

Kate Zernike, the author of the story, quotes Kenneth D. Kitts, a professor of political science at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, who says “It almost becomes an article of faith, and as with any theological belief, you can’t confront it with facts.”

Later the same day came the news that American “Special Forces” had killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. It comes as little surprise, given the skepticism at large in the U.S. today, that obvious candidates such as Texas radio host Alex Jones called it a staged, faked event, immediately publishing a story on his InfoWars site entitled Red Alert: Government Had Osama bin Laden Frozen for Years.

And to be fair, the U.S. Goverment isn’t exactly helping matters by quickly dumping Bin Laden’s body into deep seas and failing to provide any compelling proof of his recent death.

Other instant critics of U.S. policy also quickly chimed in. This from Russia Today, suggesting it signals the endgame in Afghanistan:

Conspiracy theories aside, to no one’s surprise the U.S. State Department is warning of likely terrorist attacks in the wake of the alleged assassination of Bin Laden. Lots of supposed experts on terrorism are rushing to state the obvious (from Reuters):

“Whilst we in the West might have the satisfaction of justice having been dealt to a terrorist, many will still see Osama bin Laden as a martyr. Make no mistake: violent jihadists will react to this,” Julian Lindley-French of London’s Chatham House think-tank told Reuters Insider television.

Roland Jacquard, head of the International Terrorism Observatory in Paris, said the United States would be targeted.

“The way in which he was killed, by a military commando, shows this will have important consequences for the future. It will be a call for Jihad, he will remain a very real-life martyr for the rest of the organization,” Jacquard told RTL radio.

Already Monday, Islamic militants hinted at revenge.

“Oh God, please make this news not true… God curse you Obama,” said one message on an Arabic language forum. “Oh Americans… it is still legal for us to cut your necks.”

“Osama may be killed but his message of Jihad will never die. Brothers and sisters, wait and see, his death will be a blessing in disguise,” said a poster on another Islamist forum…

Alex Jones’ colleague Paul Joseph Watson, editor of InfoWars, details the horror expressed by traditional media stalwarts like Bill O’Reilly at Jones’ sudden appearance in the mainstream:

It has become abundantly clear that the establishment is so petrified of the fact that Alex Jones is at the tip of the spear of a new media revolution that is sweeping away the old guard, that we have now reached the point where talking heads like Bill O’Reilly and indeed the Obama White House itself dare not even mention his name.

While O’Reilly has lost 21% of his younger viewers, the Alex Jones Show is routinely number one on Shoutcast and has attracted You Tube viewing figures totaling hundreds of millions.

Bill O’Reilly’s flagship website is ranked at a truly pathetic 45,000 on Alexa.com, compared to Alex Jones’ Infowars which comes in 43,000 places above him at around 2,000…

Alex Jones, the host of the radio show on which Charlie Sheen raged last week, vehemently defended the Two and Half Men star on The View arguing that Sheen is a recovering addict who’s being harassed and portrayed poorly by CBS, Chuck Lorre and the media.

“I just think that he’s somebody going through a hard time who got clean,” said Jones. “It’s wrong from them to be prodding him and demonizing him and trying to make him blow up. That’s actually what I believe’s going on here … Charlie’s tired of being held up like the devil.”

But, the discussion quickly goes off-topic as Jones relentlessly hypes his website and simultaneously rails against the TSA, financial institutions that are “bankrupting” the country and George W. Bush. Eventually, an exasperated Barbara Walters brings the segment to a close while Jones talks over her.

Interesting editorial from Alex Jones and Paul Watson at PrisonPlanet, in which they credit conservative journalist Matt Drudge with forcing the TSA into backing off from its much-hyped newly invasive procedures:

Despite the establishment media presiding over another mass hoax in claiming that Americans were completely happy with invasive airport security measures, contrary to polls showing a majority in opposition, and that the national opt out day was a failure, the fact that the TSA was forced to change its policy by mothballing naked body scanners and curtailing aggressive pat downs clearly goes to show that the man who almost single-handedly drove the issue, Matt Drudge, fought the TSA and he won.

The big networks and the so-called progressive borg hive, who instantly tried to spin the lack of delays at airports over Thanksgiving as proof that the opt-out protest had failed, conveniently failed to mention the fact that major airports across the country had deliberately mothballed their naked body scanners in a crass PR ploy aimed at deflating the momentum behind the demonstration.

Early reports began to pour in from Twitter users who said that body scanner machines were roped off and out of use in airports such as LAX, Seattle, San Jose and Columbus, Ohio. They also said that pat downs had reverted back to the standard procedure and were not the new grope downs that the TSA had announced a couple of weeks before.

The New Jersey Star-Ledger subsequently reported that, “The majority of Newark’s full-body scanners were idle throughout much of the day, depriving most passengers of the chance to opt out of the controversial screening procedure even if they had wanted to.”

At the nation’s busiest airport, Atlanta-Hartsfield, there was,”limited, if any, use of the controversial full-body scanners,” the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Later reports confirmed that, the TSA had “backed down and resorted to using the old screening procedures — metal detectors and less-intrusive pat-downs.”

Infowars reporters Rob Dew and Aaron Dykes also flew back from Denver International Airport on national opt-out day and confirmed that body scanners were completely out of use. This was the same airport in which Infowars staffer Michelle was groped by TSA goons who also attempted to fondle her children, in a story that helped kick off the rebellion against invasive airport security…

Can JP Morgan Really Be ‘Crashed’ By Buying Silver?

Max Keiser, financial analyst and host of RT’s Keiser Report, and Texas radio host Alex Jones are telling their listeners and fans to buy silver. Ostensibly the reason is to destroy the value of the JP Morgan bank. The cynic in me wonders if Alex and Max have an existing position in silver that they’d like to see increase in value. Anyone have any real insight?

According to Keiser, the goal of the “Crash JP Morgan – Buy Silver!” campaign is to force JP Morgan to cover its negative bets. He claims “There’s no way they can cover their liabilities if we all buy 1 silver coin and demand physical delivery.”

The charges that JP Morgan has been manipulating the silver market are not new. Back in May the New York Post reported on a federal investigation and just this month a class action law suit was commenced alleging that around June 2008, when JP Morgan acquired Bear Stearns and its short positions in silver futures, JP Morgan and another bank, HSBC, conspired to manipulate the market for silver futures and options contracts for their own benefit. Paul Craig Roberts, an economist who served as an Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan Administration, puts to pen the vision of Alex Jones and the Infowars camp (see Alex’s video monologue below too) for a Mad Max type of collapsed society:

It was 2017. Clans were governing America.

Clans organized around families and individuals who possessed stocks of food, bullion, guns and ammunition.

The first clans organized around local police forces. The conservatives’ war on crime during the late 20th century and the Bush/Obama war on terror during the first decade of the 21st century had resulted in the police becoming militarized and unaccountable.

As society broke down, the police became warlords. The state police broke apart, and the officers were subsumed into the local forces of their communities. The newly formed tribes expanded to encompass the relatives and friends of the police.

The dollar had collapsed as world reserve currency in 2012 when the worsening economic depression made it clear to Washington’s creditors that the federal budget deficit was too large to be financed except by the printing of money.

With the dollar’s demise, import prices skyrocketed. As Americans were unable to afford foreign-made goods, the transnational corporations that were producing offshore for US markets were bankrupted, further eroding the government’s revenue base.

The government was forced to print money in order to pay its bills, causing domestic prices to rise rapidly. Faced with hyperinflation, Washington took recourse in terminating Social Security and Medicare and followed up by confiscating the remnants of private pensions. This provided a one-year respite, but with no more resources to confiscate, money creation and hyperinflation resumed.

Organized food deliveries broke down when the government fought hyperinflation with fixed prices and the mandate that all purchases and sales had to be in US paper currency. Unwilling to trade appreciating goods for depreciating paper, goods disappeared from stores…

Steve Watson warns of false flag attacks in cyberspace that could take down the Internet, at InfoWars:

An increasing clamour to restrict and control the internet on behalf of the government, the Pentagon, the intelligence community and their private corporate arms, could result in a staged cyber attack being used as justification.

Over recent months we have seen a great increase in media coverage of inflated fears over a possible “electronic Pearl Harbor” event, with reports claiming that the U.S. could be “felled within 15 minutes”.

Vastly over-hyped (and in some cases completely asinine) claims that the power grids and other key infrastructure such as rail networks and water sources are wired up to the public internet have permeated such coverage.

Is the United States government or outside forces the real threat to cyber security? Alex Jones says that the government is trying to silence free speech in America by expanding their reach on the internet. He also says his own personal sites have been censored, even deleted.

Threats against computer networks in the United States are grossly exaggerated. Dire reports issued by the Defense Science Board and the Center for Strategic and International Studies “are usually richer in vivid metaphor — with fears of ‘digital Pearl Harbors’ and ‘cyber-Katrinas’ — than in factual foundation,” writes Evgeny Morozov, a respected researcher and blogger who writes on the political effects of the internet.

Morozov notes that much of the data on the supposed cyber threat “are gathered by ultra-secretive government agencies — which need to justify their own existence — and cyber-security companies — which derive commercial benefits from popular anxiety.”

When the Cybersecurity Act was introduced by Senator John Rockefeller last year, he made similar claims about the threat of cyber attacks, adding “Would it have been better if we’d have never invented the Internet?”…

Bilderberg 2010 Meeting: Spain, June 3-6

Journalist Jim Tucker has made a career of following the publicity-shy organization of elite power-mongers known as the Bilderberg Group. He reveals the details of their “secret” 2010 meeting at American Free Press:

The Bilderberg group will conduct its annual meeting June 3-6 in Sitges, Spain (a small, exclusive resort town about 20 miles from Barcelona) behind a wall of armed guards who will seal off the resort in a futile attempt to keep the event secret.

Bilderberg’s meeting will follow that of its brother group, the Trilateral Commission, which will gather at the Four Seasons Resort in Dublin, Ireland May 6-10. Leaders of Bilderberg also attend the Trilateralists’ meeting to map their common agenda. About 300 attend Trilateral Commission meetings, which are conducted behind sealed-off, guarded floors of their hotel. About 100 will attend Bilderberg, which seals off the entire resort behind platoons of uniformed police and private security.

Bilderberg hopes to keep the global recession going for at least a year, according to an international financial consultant who deals personally with many of them. This is because, among several reasons, Bilderberg still hopes to create a global “treasury department” under the United Nations. Bilderberg first undertook this mission at its meeting last spring in Greece, but the effort was blocked by nationalists in Europe and the United States. “Nationalists” (a dirty word in Bilderberg) objected to surrendering sovereignty to the UN.

AFP’s source pointed to the words of French President Nicolas Sarkozy in a March 29 speech at notoriously left-wing Columbia University, where he said, “We should invent a new global monetary order.”

He was clearly referring to the recently proposed world “treasury department.”

Bilderberg’s ultimate goal remains unchanged: Turn the UN into a world government with “nation-states” becoming merely geographic references…

World Government, Alex Jones and Me

Columnist Gideon Rachman credits Alex Jones with his success (sort of), in the Financial Times:

To this day, the most successful article I have ever written was a column called “And now for a world government“. By successful, I don’t mean that it was a particularly good article – this is “success” defined in terms of internet hits.

I noticed the other day that if I type my name into Google, one of the first popular searches suggested is “Gideon Rachman world government” which yields over 40,000 results. Gideon Rachman and new world order produces 844,000 results. Slightly weirdly, another popular search seems to be “Gideon Rachman, Jewish”, which produces over 15,000 hits.

The common thread, I think, is that my world government piece was picked up by the loony right in America as grist for their conspiracy theory that there is a secret plot to create a world government and to deprive Americans of their freedom. At the time the article was published, there was a particularly persistent radio host who kept trying to interview me, by the name of Alex Jones. Something about him made me decide to steer clear. Maybe it was the crazed tone of the messages left on my answering machine. Maybe it was the fact that his programme is called “Prison Planet“. I had a vision of a shaven-headed nutcase speed-dialling me from a cell in San Quentin.

But it seems I was wrong. Alex Jones is at large and broadcasting from a radio station in Texas. He is, according to this article, the host of the “most popular conspiracy talk radio programme” in America. This may sound like rather a small niche. But it isn’t. Jones has a big following. He also feels a lively sense of rivalry with the much more famous right-wing ranter, Glenn Beck. Jones simultaneously denounces Beck as a sell-out, and accuses him of plagarising all his own best ideas.

The rivalry is telling. For Jones’s rantings are not that far removed from the anti-government, anti-Obama conspiracy theories peddled by much more famous media personalities, like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. And the theories of Jones himself are not that far removed from those of the militia movement that came to prominence after the Oklahoma bombing…

Disinfo Reviews ‘Voodoo Histories’ (And Discovers That We Are To Blame)

I recently caused something of a stir here on the disinformation® site when I posted a New York Times book review of David Aaronovitch’s Voodoo Histories: The Role of the Conspiracy Theory in Shaping Modern History.
I actually didn’t write anything to suggest how I felt about the book, and indeed I hadn’t laid hands or eyes on a copy at that time. The next day however, his publisher messengered over a great looking hardcover, so I cracked it open.

Imagine my surprise at learning, on page 3, that it was us, The Disinformation Company, that was (at least partly) behind his animosity to so-called conspiracy theories. He writes:

“… in music and DVD chains across the United States and Britain, among the limited number of books on sale, the young browser is likely to come across oversize paperbacks with titles such as Abuse Your Illusions, You Are Being Lied To , and Everything You Know Is Wrong: The Disinformation Guide to Secrets and Lies.

“Checking in at a rather substantial thirty dollars each, these books consist of bite-size essays by different authors dealing with myriad (and, frankly, random) subjects, from the oil industry to crime, via geopolitics. Their avowed purpose is to ‘act as a battering ram against the distortions, myths and outright lies that have been shoved down our throats by the government, the media, corporations, organized religion, the scientific establishment and others who want to keep the truth from us.’

“Browsing through one of the books in the Disinformation series (published by countercultural tycoon Richard Metzger), I came across a chapter titled ‘The European Union Unmasked: Dictatorship Revealed.’ In it, a Lindsay Jenkins—formerly a civil servant in the British Ministry of Defense—details the Eurocratic plot to destroy nation states.”

He sums up his sarcastic review on the Jenkins essay as “A theory that I suppose could be summed up as ‘How the Welsh Destroyed the United Kingdom.’”

Mr. Aaronovitch certainly hasn’t missed The Disinformation Company’s success with issue-oriented documentary films either. A paragraph later he writes:

“Ideas like this may also be observed in television and, latterly, in factual movies. Documentaries are increasingly partisan and liable to include material that suggests conspiracy on the part of someone or other. …And such works are given the same treatment as major exercises in historical analysis or substantial pieces of investigative journalism. In fact, they are often given a better billing. Uncountered, their arguments enter popular culture.”

In case you were wondering about Mr. Aaronovitch’s rather perturbed tone, he is indeed a bona fide establishment journalist, with his own column for Britain’s once-prestigious Times (actually it’s still prestigious, but much less so since it was dumbed-down by current owner Rupert Murdoch). Does one sense frustration that a film such as Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism, attacks his employer in the same ‘fair and balanced’ manner that the film’s main target, Fox News Channel, employs, with similar outsize success?

Well regardless, Mr. Aaronovitch has clearly been paying attention to what we’ve been publishing at Disinformation as he aims his investigative journalist’s shotgun at a broad swathe of the authors and filmmakers that we have worked with.

Of Jim Marrs, he writes: “The accolade of most ubiquitous writer across conspiracy genres has been earned by an American, the ‘award-winning journalist and New York Times best-selling author’ Jim Marrs…” He then lists some of Jim’s books and concludes: “Here is a man who must think very deeply before taking a decision about whether to cross the road.”

Ouch.

He is even snider about Graham Hancock, to whom he devotes two pages of skeptical mockery. The best he can do though, is to cite anonymous reviewers on Amazon.com: “A quick look through Hancock’s Amazon reviews shows how few purchasers seem inclined to doubt Hancock’s ‘research,’ but those few who do track down his claims discover basic errors in archaeology and astronomy.” He then goes on to cite a very unconvincing post from someone who attended a Hancock lecture in the ’90s. Come on David, can’t you do better than that?

He does try. He reports that “At the end of 1999, two BBC Horizon programs demolished Hancock comprehensively … The BBC giveth ground to the pseudo-historians, and sometimes later taketh it away.”

I have to take Mr. Aaronvitch to task here, because shortly after those programs aired, the Broadcasting Standards Commission, an organization appointed to uphold standards and fairness in UK broadcasting, found the BBC guilty of unfairly representing Hancock and co-author Robert Bauval.

The BBC program, entitled Atlantis Reborn, claimed to provide a balanced and objective “testing” of unorthodox theories relating to the development of human civilization. The Broadcasting Standards Commission judged that the central part of the BBC’s attack on Hancock and Bauval was unfair.

The program was re-edited, I am told for the first time since the BBC began showing television programs, and the corrected version was aired a month after the verdict.

Now here’s the funny thing: Mr. Aaronovitch knew all of this. He wrote about it for the Independent in 2001:

“Angered, Hancock took his case to the Broadcasting Standards Commission, arguing that he had been unfairly treated. Its conclusions led him to post on his website: “If one good thing has come out of this affair, it is that the BSC has delivered a complete vindication of Robert Bauval’s Giza-Orion Correlation Theory.” This is a distortion of vast dimensions. In fact, the BSC found overwhelmingly in the BBC’s favour, but was critical of editing and a minor editorial decision.”

Leave it to another alternative Egyptologist, the famously sharp-tongued John Anthony West, to eviscerate this argument (actually in the context of correspondence with BBC executive John Lynch):

“The Standards Committee’s adjudication that obliged Horizon to publicly acknowledge unfairness on one out of eleven counts and apologize on that count. I understand that Horizon has tried to exonerate itself or at least minimize its guilt by maintaining that, since it was indicted on eleven counts, but only found guilty on one, it is therefore innocent of the other ten, and that the judgement is, in effect, no more than a Pyrrhic victory for Hancock and Bauval.

This of course will not wash. Anyone (from the rice paddies of Bangladesh to the rain forests of Rwanda) who has experience of the workings of the law knows it is routine for ax murderers, serial rapists, mob bosses, child molesters, scam artists, con men, frauds and other societal scum to get indicted on multiple counts but convicted only on one. This is no proof of innocence on the remaining counts. It just means that the one count was so obvious and undeniable that even a biased court could not help but acknowledge it. And since that one count is often enough (in criminal cases at any rate, unfortunately not in this one) to put the miscreant out of the way and prevent further damage to society, nobody makes an issue out of it.

Anyone who reads the transcripts of what was actually said by Hancock et al. in interviews, and what was actually shown by Horizon, knows very well that Horizon is grievously guilty on most, if not all remaining counts.”

Well enough about that, but suffice it to say that Mr. Aaronovitch really doesn’t like Graham Hancock, so much so that he’ll leave out information that doesn’t support what he presumably feels is a “comprehensive demolition” of Hancock’s research (and I leave out the quotation marks around “research” intentionally, while noting that Mr. Aaronvitch does the opposite). I can personally attest that Graham researches the topics of his books first hand, to the point of exhaustion.

Other authors and filmmakers published by disinformation® who come in for a tongue-lashing by Mr. Aaronvitch include Dr. Hugh Schonfield, Henry Lincoln and Alex Jones.

He reserves a special bit of vitriol for poor old Henry, who was something of a boyhood idol of Mr. Aaronovitch’s: “When, as a teenager, I first saw him on the BBC Chronicle program in the early 1970s, I was both convinced and fascinated by him.” He was sorely disappointed to find out that:

“There were things, however, that I didn’t know about him … [he] was not, in fact, in any proper sense, a historian, but an occasional actor and a successful scriptwriter…. So Lincoln was, in his working life, a moderately successful storyteller.”

He then layers further sarcasm over a very selective reading of Henry’s work. I won’t defend Henry here, but let’s just note that as with Graham Hancock, if Henry Lincoln’s career as broadcaster and author is “moderately successful,” then one would not wish to describe Mr. Aaronovitch’s for fear of coming off as mean to the point of libel. Not that libel seems to be something that our dear author thinks about too much.

So, should you buy this book? Actually, if you have the $27.95 needed for a copy, yes, I think you should, just to see what the critics are saying about the authors and filmmakers whose work we publish on this site, in our books and in our films. And I should note, Mr. Aaronovitch, that those weighty disinformation® anthologies you cite at the beginning of your book, are actually only $24.95, not the thirty bucks you mention.

On second thoughts, take advice from Mr. Aaronovitch, who, writing of Lincoln, Leigh & Baigent’s Holy Blood, Holy Grail, says: “On the first day of publication in Britain, 43,000 hardcover copies … were sold. I waited for the paperback.”

Alex Jones Exposes Agenda To ‘Blacklist’ Dissenting Websites

The Western world, from Australia to the United States, UK and parts of Europe, are moving in a unified front toward dictatorial Internet censorship. Australia has led the way, despite outcry from its populace, by “filtering” out certain banned content. In the United States, Sen. Jay Rockefeller, in continuing his family’s tradition of oppressing free humanity, has pushed forward Cybersecurity legislation that has already passed the House. He has done so in the name of warding off ghastly cyber “attackers” conceivably fronting for al Qaeda while ushering in a means to restrict free speech and expression online for the general population.

With Obama’s support, most of the developed world has accepted plans for government-approved online activity and Pentagon-monitored internet traffic. The U.S. and UK are facilitating the hijacking of what has, until now, been a highly-democratic Internet. Overall, it has been a technological God-send for bringing together communication and strongly expressing thought outside of the mainstream information available on television and in print.

Now, people are being forced onto the corporate-dominated Internet2– once again, in the name of “security.” (Internet) Freedom sacrificed at the same false alter of (Internet) Security. Independent blogs, news sites and online businesses will all be financially disadvantaged by access fees not demanded of dominant entities. What is today outside the ‘norm’ but well within free speech will tomorrow be evaluated by politically-correct criteria that will be used to identify sites to block and users to deny access. Currently, a campaign is underway to convince the public to accept “driver’s licenses” for the once-free Internet.

Already, government “blacklists” have been exposed. On its lists? The usual suspects– Infowars.com, PrisonPlanet.com, Wikileaks.org and the like…
