<p>But is that it? Or are there other biological domains hiding in the shadows—missed, like the archaea were for so long, because biologists have been using the wrong tools to look? That is the question asked recently by Jonathan Eisen of the University of California, Davis, and his colleagues. They suspect there are, and in a paper just published in the Public Library of Science, they present an analysis which suggests there might indeed be at least one other, previously hidden, domain of life.</p>

<p>Created at a cost of $30 million, this experimental one-cell organism opens the way to the manipulation of life on a previously unattainable scale, several researchers and ethics experts said. Scientists have been altering DNA piecemeal for a generation, producing a menagerie of genetically engineered plants and animals, but the ability to craft an entire organism offers a new power over life, they said.</p>
<p>The accomplishment, documented in the peer-reviewed journal Science, may stir anew nagging questions of ethics, law and public safety about artificial life that biomedical experts have been publicly debating for more than a decade.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is literally a turning point in the relationship between man and nature,&#8221; said molecular biologist Richard Ebright at Rutgers University, who wasn&#8217;t involved in the project. &#8220;For the first time, someone has generated an entire artificial cell with pre-determined properties.&#8221;&#8230;</p></blockquote>

<p>The landmark operation involved injecting the scaffold of a windpipe, taken from a dead donor, with stem cells from the boy before implanting it in his throat.</p>
<p>The stem cells were removed from the boy&#8217;s bone marrow and were ready for use just four hours later.</p>
<p>The cells trigger regrowth to create a normal windpipe without any of the risks of normal transplantation such as the organ being rejected by the body.</p>
<p>The operation took place at Great Ormond Street Hospital, in London, on Monday and the boy is breathing by himself and able to speak normally.</p></blockquote>

<p>The research shows how daughter cells use conveyor-belt-like structures to transport the damaged proteins back to the mother cells, thereby allowing the new young cells to be &#8216;born&#8217; young and healthy. </p>
<p>&#8216;Previously it was believed that these structures allowed only one-way traffic of proteins and organelles from mother cell to daughter cell,&#8217; said Professor Nyström. &#8216;We can now show that damaged proteins are transported in the opposite direction. In principle, this means that the daughter cell uses the mother cell as a dustbin for all the rubbish resulting from the ageing process, ensuring that the newly formed cell is born without age-related damage.&#8217; &#8230;</p></blockquote>
