Peter Vallone, Fluoride-Hating Councilman, Wants Your Teeth to Rot

[disinfo ed.'s note: Phunkychic666, who posted this story, stresses that it's the comments to the Voice article that are worth reading, not the story itself.]

The comments on this article by Sergio Hernandez on the Village Voice site are well worth the read:

A city councilman from Queens apparently wants your your teeth to rot and fall out. The Daily News says Councilman Peter Vallone is planning to introduce a bill that would end New York’s 45-year practice of adding fluoride to its tap water, citing safety concerns and comparing the mineral to prescription anti-depressants.

Via the News:

“This amounts to forced medication by the government,” said Councilman Peter Vallone (D-Queens), who plans to introduce fluoride-removal legislation at the next Council meeting, “What’s next? They decide we’re depressed and add Prozac to our drinking water?”
Of course, scientists and government agencies (including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) have long held that water…

U.S. Wants to Reduce Fluoride in Drinking Water

I almost couldn’t believe this headline from WebMD. Turns out that the government’s motivation for wanting to reduce fluoride levels in water is not actually due to the many deleterious health effects of ingesting fluoride, but still, it’s a start!

The recommended level of fluoride in U.S. drinking water supplies should be lowered to prevent dental problems, according to a joint announcement today by officials from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The HHS is recommending that water supplies contain 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water, replacing the current recommended range of 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams.

That recommendation won’t go into effect immediately. It will be published in the Federal Register, followed by a period of comment from the public and others for 30 days. [disinfo ed.'s note: go to the HHS site to find out more.]

In other action today, the EPA…

Erin Brockovich Where Are You? Hexavalent Chromium Found In 31 American Cities

This is the best advertisement for reverse-osmosis walter filters that I’ve seen yet. Mind you, the intentionally-added fluoride in many public water systems is just as bad — although interested parties would have you believe otherwise. Don’t think that bottled water is the answer, either — many bottled waters contain chemicals too because 40% of bottled water is drawn from municipal supplies. From the Washington Post:

A new analysis showing the presence of a probable carcinogen in the tap water of 31 cities across the country, including the District and Bethesda, has raised questions about what consumers in those communities can do to reduce their exposure.

The chemical, hexavalent chromium, got public attention via the 2000 film “Erin Brockovich” and has been deemed a “probable carcinogen” by the National Toxicology Program, part of the National Institutes of Health.

Although basic water filters such as those made by Brita and PUR do…

The Case Against Fluoride

[disinfo ed.'s note: The following is an excerpt from The Case Against Fluoride: How Hazardous Waste Ended Up in Our Drinking Water and the Bad Science and Powerful Politics That Keep It There by Paul Connett, James Beck, Spedding Micklem, courtesy of Chelsea Green Publishing]

At a public meeting held on October 17, 2009, in Yellow Springs, Ohio, a community that was considering halting its fluoridation program, Paul Connett gave a twenty-minute presentation on the scientific arguments against the practice. After a county health commissioner and local dentist responded, a woman in the audience said, “Whether this practice is safe or not, or beneficial or not, I want freedom of choice. It is my right to choose what substances I put into my body, not some governmental agency’s.”

This woman echoed what many opponents of fluoridation have believed and articulated for over sixty years: Government has no right to force anyone to take…

American Dental Association Warns of Dangers of Fluoride

What is the ADA thinking?!? It’s dental dogma, surely, that everyone should poison themselves with fluoride in order to avoid tooth cavities. Maybe, just maybe, the tide is turning against forced consumption of fluoride. Ethan A. Huff reports for Natural News:

Advocates of fluoridated water insist that the chemical additive is good for teeth, but actual science routinely shows otherwise, including a new study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association confirming fluoride as a toxic substance that actually destroys teeth, particularly those of developing young children and babies.

When people are exposed to excessive levels of fluoride through sources like drinking water, foods and beverages and even swallowed toothpaste, it often results in a condition known as dental fluorosis. The internal uptake of fluoride into teeth over time causes their enamel to become mottled and discolored, the end result being damaged teeth that have essentially rotted from…

The Fluoride Fraud

Posted by judy_hollister on August 10, 2010

By Abby Martin for Mediaroots.org:

When was the last time you stopped to think about the one thing you can’t live without? I don’t mean the Internet – I’m talking about water. Without clean drinking water, life could not go on. This is why it’s so important that we know what is in our water. For the past sixty-five years, city governments nationwide have been adding a controversial substance called fluoride to municipal water supplies.

You probably recognize the word fluoride from the back of your toothpaste tube or from your visits to the dentist. But the fluoride added to our water is not the same as that in our toothpaste. The chemical added to our water is a fluorine compound called hexafluorosilicic acid that is generated as a by-product from the phosphate fertilizer industry.

Phosphates are minerals that are used to make fertilizer, and phosphate mining industry is a giant moneymaker. Fluoride is created by the production of fertilizer as…

Irish Minister’s Fluoride Hypocrisy: ‘Fluoridated Water Causes Cancer in Children!’ But You’re Going to Pay for it Anyway!

Posted by majestic on June 14, 2010

Neil Foster stirs up the fluoride-in-water health controversy, in Ireland’s Sovereign Independent:

In the video below, John Gormley, 3 years prior to becoming the [Irish] Minister of the Environment clearly stated on RTE’s ‘Primetime’ program that fluoridated water was dangerous for babies and indeed elaborated on this by informing the public, quite rightly, that it caused bone cancer in children. He now expects us to pay, through the use of water meters, for the very same fluoridated toxic water which he openly admits is detrimental to human health.

Despite the clear evidence that this is indeed the case and the statement by Gormley back in 2003 that there was no need for fluoride in the public water supply, it is still there…

Talking With The Guy Who Puts Fluoride in D.C.’s Water

Posted by Tyler Bass on May 25, 2010

Tom Jacobus has been the general manager of the Washington Aqueduct since 1994. As we finished up our phone discussion yesterday, he laughed at my having referenced the communist plot accusations from Dr. Strangelove regarding fluoride in the water. “If it is a communist plot, it’s not working,” he said. In this correspondence, he didn’t care to elaborate on his personal views of mass-drugging, but he simply said on the phone that if he had some serious personal problem with it, he would have put in his resignation long ago.

The aqueduct’s use of fluoride, he revealed, is the product of a political consensus forged in D.C., Arlington and Falls Church, where the city councils and mayors have all acquiesced to the practice.

I’ve decided to keep this article the color of water. The following is my correspondence with the man who puts fluoride in the water of America’s decision-makers, preceded first by this film from the Fluoride Action Network:

Tyler Bass: “Mr. Jacobus, I do appreciate your willingness to discuss with me the nature of water fluoridation and your take on its effectiveness, if any…

Health Ministry Finds that Fluoridation Does Not Reduce Tooth Decay

Posted by phunkychic666 on May 2, 2010

From Dental Health Magazine:

Statistics from a study conducted by the New Zealand Ministry of Health suggest that there are no advantages derived from fluoridation. These statistics actually match similar arguments set forth by the American Dental Association.

The latter organization conducted a large study on some 39,000 American children and found that they did not derive any advantages from the use of fluoride.

The process of fluoridation is the practice of adding fluoride minerals to a water source so that people can get exposed to the mineral through drinking water. Some bodies of water already have fluoride in them and do not need fluoride added.

The fluoride is allegedly added so that it can help in the prevention of cavity development. The practice of adding fluoride to water is suppose to allow many people, regardless of income, to receive healthy doses of fluoride. Yet, recent studies are revealing that the fluoridation…

Fluoride In Water Latest Volcano Health Concern

Posted by majestic on April 17, 2010

It’s long been known that fluoride is a serious threat to health, causing many to question it’s being added to municipal water systems. Advocates of fluoride in water routinely dismiss those voicing concerns as conspiracy theorists, but how are they going to spin this: scientists are warning that the volcanic ash now settling over Europe contains naturally-high levels of fluoride that may contaminate water supplies and threaten the health of livestock and people. Reported by AFP:

REYKJAVIK — The fallout of volcanic ash over parts of Iceland could jeopardise the safety of drinking water, health authorities warned Friday, but said the greatest health risk was to livestock.

“It is important to prevent the ash from reaching water supplies, both for public and animal health reasons and for safe milk production,” Halldor Runolfsson of the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority told AFP.

His colleague Guthjon Gunnarsson said the agency was evaluating the quality of drinking…

Californians Battle To Stop Fluoride In Water

The Los Angeles Times is running a very angry editorial mocking Californian citizens who are resisting government attempts to place fluoride in their water supply. If I had a subscription to the LA Times, I’d cancel it now – check this out:

During the Middle Ages, pogroms throughout Europe were instigated by rumors that Jews were poisoning the wells. Then during the Cold War, when communists became the Western world’s boogeymen, conspiracy theorists believed fluoridated water was a Red plot to destroy our society. Today, with modern chemical testing and health studies, it might seem we’re in a position to leave this kind of water hysteria behind. But not in Watsonville.

A recent push to fluoridate the water in that Santa Cruz County agricultural city has prompted a public outcry and a threat by a key employer to leave town. City voters passed an initiative to block fluoridation in 2002, but…

Kangaroos Victims of Factory Fluoride

Posted by phunkychic666 on February 23, 2010

DEBORAH GOUGH writes in the Age:
Kangaroo

SCORES of starving and pain-ridden kangaroos have been culled after developing tooth and bone deformities from breathing and ingesting fluoride emissions. Many more are believed to be suffering from growths that will kill them.

The affected kangaroos are living near the Alcoa aluminium smelter in Portland, in the state’s south-west, and the Austral Bricks factory at Craigieburn.

Autopsies performed at Melbourne University on 49 kangaroos culled at Alcoa on a single day last year found all but one were suffering from flurosis, which leads to excessive bone growths, or lesions, on joints in the paws, ankles and calves.

It can also cause tooth and jaw deformities that hinder eating and foraging. The Sunday Age has been told more than 200 ill kangaroos living near both affected sites have been culled in recent years, but this figure could not be confirmed.
