I spent most of this past spring and summer rolling my eyes every time I heard a news story about the swine flu. Almost every day local reporters got hysterical about 5 or 10 or 20 confirmed cases. Entire schools closed in response to a handful of kids with fevers, and as if there were no war in Afghanistan, no economic crisis, and no other epidemics claiming ten times as many lives, newscasters talked about H1N1 (the proper name for swine flu) for hours.
I have a degree in public health and my work focuses on preventing rape and other acts of violence and supporting survivors in healing from abuse. Ukraine Closes All Schools and Cinemas over Swine Flu

KIEV — Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko on Friday ordered a three-week closure of Ukraine’s schools and cinemas in the toughest measures adopted yet to combat the swine flu virus in Europe.
“From today, all the school establishments in Ukraine — be they private or public — will be put on three weeks of holiday,” she told her cabinet in comments carried on Ukrainian television.
Tymoshenko said the government would also be banning “all public gatherings, every concert and every cinema showing for three weeks.” The government will also introduce “special regimes” to limit the movement of Ukraine’s citizens from one region to another for non-urgent purposes, she said. Ukraine has borders with four EU countries.
The prime minister’s tough actions came as Ukraine confirmed its first deaths from the A(H1N1) virus, amid a growing panic over several dozen unexplained deaths in the west of the country.

Poll: 75% Of Finns Don’t Want The Swine Flu Vaccine

In Finland at least three somewhat big media outlets, Ilta-Sanomat, MTV3 and Helsingin Sanomat, have held polls asking the Finnish people if they are going to take the swine flu vaccine. The results are as follows.
The first online poll was held by MTV3. It’s unclear how many people took part in it, but 61% said they do not want the swine flu vaccine.
Nearly 12,000 people answered the Helsingin Sanomat gallup, and the overwhelming majority, 75%, answered “No”.
Then a third poll at the end of September held by Ilta-Sanomat rendered the exact same percentage as the Helsingin Sanomat gallup, 75% will not be taking the vaccine. Over 16,000 people took part in the Ilta-Sanomat poll.
Swine Flu Vaccine Mandate for NY Health Care Workers Halted by Judge’s Restraining Order

Amid growing discontent among New York health care workers who are being forced to receive swine flu vaccine injections, the Public Employees Federation sued in state court to halt the mandate. Friday, a state Supreme Court judge issued a restraining order granting a temporary halt to the mandate until a subsequent hearing can be completed.
The lawsuit was brought by the Public Employees Federation, New York State United Teachers and four Albany nurses. Until today, these workers were required to be vaccinated by November 30th or many were told they would be fired from their jobs. Others were told pay increases would be suspended. Across the board, there was a campaign of intimidation against NY health care workers to force them into receiving the swine flu vaccine injections.
With this court order, mandatory vaccines are temporarily suspended pending a follow-up court hearing on October 30.
Swine Flu Shots Revive a Debate About Vaccines

Flu Vaccinations: It’s a Jab or Your Job

New York Institutes Mandatory Swine Flu Vaccination
Well we knew it was coming, but as a New Yorker this scares the crap out of me. If they try to enforce it on me or my family (yes, one of us is a health care worker) I’m moving. See the story in Newsday:
Despite a planned rally in Albany Tuesday to protest a state regulation requiring health care workers be vaccinated against influenza — both seasonal and swine flu — New York’s top public health official predicts dissenters will ultimately extinguish their anger and roll up their sleeves.
The regulation, which was approved in August, comes with a stinging addendum: Get vaccinated or get fired.
But some nurses and many other health care providers say the regulation violates their personal freedom and leaves them vulnerable to vaccine injury. And they cite deaths associated with the last federal government swine-flu vaccination program in 1976.
British Girl Dies After Vaccination
Adding fuel to the fire that has been growing as a result of rumors of government-mandated swine flu vaccination, the “vaccines are poisons” crowd will surely jump on this. The question I have is more along the lines of do vaccines do more harm than good? It would be such a large violation of the Hypocratic Oath that I really find it hard to believe that all doctors advising their patients to take the vaccine would be blind to a nefarious New World Order conspiracy to wipe out or dumb down the population. Is this propaganda designed to derail the widespread public distrust as to what’s actually in the new flu vaccines and what they might do to our bodies? Or is that just paranoid? My vote is that it is propaganda but whether or not it’s for nefarious purposes I’m not so sure. Comments?
